LMD
What sort of books? We're currently loving picture books by Oliver Jeffers. We just finished the My Father's Dragon series which my 4y/o adored.
dlpardo
My son really loved Curious George the entire year he was four. He was also liked a lot of books about dogs: Clifford, Harry the Dirty Dog, Carl, Harry McLarry, McDuff, Tucker off his Rocker, Martha Speaks. From here I will just make a list, The Little Engine that Could, Olivia books by Ian Falconer, Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin adapted by Paul O. Zelinsky, The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers plus all the other Oliver Jeffers books, Where the Wild Things Are, Madeline, Kevin Henkes mouse books, Caps for Sale, Frog and Toad, Stellaluna, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, The Seven Silly Eaters,The Gingerbread Man, Richard Scarry Busytown books, the Babar series, and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. My son just turned five so I was able to remember a lot of books. Hopefully this list helps.

lula
Not books per se, but my 4 year old is crazy about comics. I do edit his options but for us older DC and Marvel comics have been a huge hit. The comic compilation books keep him busy on car rides for much longer periods of time than a huge stack of regular picture books. Picture books that are popular are Mo Williams, Curious Geoge, Mike Mulligan, Dr. Suess, Maurice Sendek, Art Book for Children, The Z was Zapped, the Trucktown books, the Lewis Carrol Poetry for Young People Book is the only poetry he currently is into, mostly really basic items that are on most bookshelves so this is probably not helpful for you! He is crazy about looking through my photography books so I have been busy moving things to higher shelves. For reading aloud we are doing Danny Champion of the World. Farrar
When my boys were four, it was all about the funny books - I had a list here of a few of our favorites. They also really loved fairy tales at that age, so all those Zelinsky versions were good, as well as fairy tale take offs - I remember we really liked The End by Richard Engleski (another funny book, but still). At that age, they were just getting into longer picture books every once in awhile too, so things like One Morning in Maine, Mike Mulligan, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, etc. which took a slightly longer time to read were things they were beginning to ask for. Alte Veste Academy
Here are some of my boys' favorites from age 4. Any and all "fact books" that have pictures and a bit of information. All DK books. My boys have loved fact books while my daughter always prefers a story. Oddhopper Opera Mike Mulligan and More George and Martha Dinopedia Make Way for Ducklings Blueberries for Sal Keats's Neighborhood: An Ezra Jack Keats Treasury The Complete Adventures of Curious George The Little Red Hen (We have the Paul Galdone Nursery Treasury but they have just released these pretty little volumes. My boys were partial to Galdone's illustrations for these classic stories.) Richard Scarry's Best Mother Goose Ever (DS5 still loves this. It was virtually all he would let me read to him when he was 2.) Anything by Seuss, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Where the Wild Things Are, Harold and the Purple Crayon... too many to mention! ErinD
Seconding Mike Mulligan. Katy and the Big Snow. Terry Pratchett wrote a really cute kids book called "Where's My Cow?", set (loosely) in medieval times, that was a big hit with both the 4 year old and his dad who was reading it. Anything that his big brother owns - last night I found him asleep with a "Bugs of Ontario" guidebook that he had smuggled into his room.
