kwickimom
Instead of putting all my questions on the "hows it going thread" I figured I would start a new one. I am struggling with doing CTC next year now that I have the TM and some of the texts. It looks like it may be too difficult for my dd who will just turn 10 next August. She is doing well in Preparing but has comprehension issues. I am worried that the texts in CTC are too difficult. My options are: 1. to just do it and stretch it to 5 days and hope that it wends up working. I have a schedule that can work if we do a 5 day plan, but this may only help with time and not with comprehension. 2. To go half speed...again will help on time, but not on comprehension 3. To do something totally different next year and do CTC for 6th grade. I really love HOD and Preparing is going well. We like all the skills and the TM layout and the book selections. I hate to skip a year, but we may have to. If you were in my shoes, WWYD? If you skipped a year what would you use? TIA
birchbark
I would do something different next year or better yet, slow Preparing to half-speed so you can hit CTC for sixth grade.
jer2911mom
If you do CTC in 6th, would it bother you that you wouldn't finish the 4-year cycle before high school? Is it possible that by next August she will have made some leaps? A lot can happen in a year. If you have to use something else, maybe ECC? Kathy yes it will bother me that I cant do a 4 year cycle by high school. That was another issue I was worried about. I plan to send her to public high school. She may make some leaps by next August, I probably won't make my purchase until summer but I was looking for a back up plan. I thought I was decided to just forge ahead and try it, but I still have doubts. She is not getting better with comprehension as of yet. Another Lynn
Would it help her comprehension to "popcorn" read SAW and gradually work up to her reading it independently?
blessed2five
I am in a similar situation with my 4th grade dd who is in Preparing right now. My older dd is in RTR and there is no way I see my younger dd using RTR in 6th grade. I have slowed down Preparing to half speed and plan to stretch it out over at least 11/2 years. Each day we do either the read a loud or history reading box together along with Bible. Then she picks two of the independent boxes to do each day. We do LA R&S each day along with either the poetry box or any dictation she needs to complete. This has worked great for us. However, if you are looking for something to do next year I would try MFW ECC or one of their other years, perhaps American History. We loved ECC and it would be a perfect introduction to all the countries we will start to look at more closely with CTC. I love HOD but I do see where you are coming from. I want my dc to get the most out of their programs and I see where doing a level two young they would not enjoy or appreciate them as much. I hope this helps. Keep us posted on what you are thinking. Joyofsixreboot
I have similar problems. I will have my dd in 4th and 10 yo when she hits CTC. I don't have the TM but everyone seems to feel it's a leap. I really want to keep my now 5th and 2nd grader together. I'm wondering if I might try Sonlight world history (whatever the letters are now). Or I could do WTM w/ CHOLL. I just don't know and don't know where she'll be. Thanks, I think there may be a lot of people in our situation. I was going to start my son in Beyond next year and even if I stretch out Beyond and Bigger he will be in the same boat. LHFHG is way too babyish for him. I was looking at MFW ECC last night and there is some overlap in books with HOD and I just am not really impressed with it. I was also thinking of doing a Sonlight year of American History maybe. This will also not help out my problem of not having a full 4 yr history rotation by high school. I really dont want to totally leave HOD. I really wanted to just follow a program up to high school. I also was thinking of just working on the 3 R's and reading until she was ready to go to CTC, hoping that at least before December she may be ready.
