Jayne J
a huge PITA!!! Why oh Why didn't they put finished maps in the TM???? Scanning back and forth between the huge (sketchily drawn) blank maps and the teeny tiny maps from the book (really tiny--in the one we needed today the western 2/3rds of the US was 3"x3") and the actual wall map (that you need because at least 1/2 of all the things you need to label are not in the book) is making me crazy!!! It is making me talk in parentheses. We had to Label St. Louis 3 times because I couldn't get all the maps to line up. GRRRRRR:glare: Just consider this a public service announcement. Homemama2
It is making me talk in parentheses :lol: Thanks for the heads up! I was planning to use this next year....but that would drive me nuts too.
jplain
It is making me talk in parentheses. I hate when that happens. As a perfectionist, I'm glad for the heads up. Would it have worked better if you'd had your own set that you did ahead of time? Or maybe an intermediately-sized copy could be made at a copy shop? Of course that assumes one has time to spend on something like that...
CourtneySue
We're using BF Geography right now and I agree that it would help if there were examples of the maps in the guide. You should email them about this. I know that they're in the process of redoing and updating all of their guides and they are asking for people to tell them what changes they would like to see. edelweiss
We're doing BF Geography right now too, and I absolutely agree with you! It is a pain and honestly my girls are kind of over doing all of the map work anyway. I think we are just going to read the books and look at an atlas and skip the map work entirely. It sounded better than it turned out to be IMO.
Jayne J
I am so glad I am not alone! I was beginning to think I was particularly incompetant. :tongue_smilie: I thought it would be so fun, and the oversized maps seemed perfect to accomodate huge handwriting, but now the maps just make me want to scream. (And talk in parentheses.) Unfortunately my kids enjoy it, so I will soldier on. I am going to have to figure out a way to "pre-draw" a map of my own so I can avoid this in the future. I will definately write Beautiful Feet and let them know how much a finished map would be appreciated. Of course that assumes one has time to spend on something like that... Yes it would definitely work better if I had done this ahead of time. The biggest problem IMO is the number of different maps I have to use to complete the blank map and the oversized map is soo vaguely drawn. Honestly, if I had it to do over again, I'd just read the books and use an existing wall sized US map and plot the various journeys and locations in marker or something. I'd skip the blank maps entirely. Really, I'd skip the TM altogether and just get the books, skim through and choose what I wanted to map ahead of time. The TM is fairly useless if you don't want a unit study approach to the books, especially for grammar stage kids.
CourtneySue
I will say that overall it has been a good experience for us so far. And it is probably my son's favorite subject. I have been using the recommendation of having him keep a geography notebook and this has been a huge hit. I use it for copywork and have him draw pictures. In fact, maps that were small enough to fit in his notebook would probably be better for him, but he does enjoy getting out the maps, too.
