Root beer floats in the summer--what in the winter?

Recommended Posts

Hot chocolate! When I was little we always went to the lights at a nearby Catholic church that decorated their grounds. It was a winter wonder-land for a little girl :). What completed it was the sweet ladies that handed out hot chocolate & "flower cookies". Those round-scalloped edged butter cookies that are in the cheaper no-name section at the store :). I LOVED THOSE COOKIES. And that night. Every Christmas I couldn't wait. I wonder sometimes what will make such a memory for my kids :). What will be their "flower cookie" :).

I'm looking for a dessert more than a beverage.

I started out making lovely desserts for Sunday nights, then the group grew, and I could no longer make specialty desserts in the quantity needed, every single week. I settled on making root beer floats on the first Sunday of the month as an easier dessert alternative. It just doesn't seem appropriate any more with colder weather closing in.

I need more ideas. :bigear:

ETA: The bar is kind of high, because people know of my professional skills, and because I've traditionally done nice desserts for Sunday night. I'm just tired, and looking for a break without completely dropping the tradition. :tongue_smilie:

But, see, for me, a good hot chocolate, made with milk and real cocoa would BE dessert: warm, satisfying, and filling. Whipped cream or (if we have to have them), marshmallows would be a bonus. I don't think you would have to make anything more food-y than that, personally. :001_smile:

It's not fancy, but it is easy and warm and YUMMY: Crock Pot Chocolate Mud Cake. :)

Oh! Dessert! Winter favorites:

Bread pudding (make ahead & refrigerate, pop in the oven 1 hr or so before serving), wait, is it at your house?

Hmm...pumpkin rolls, LOVE these, can spend a day making a bunch & freeze them. Just pop them out of the freezer and serve~can serve frozen or not, kinda like Sara Lee Pound Cake :D.

Hot chocolate pudding with vanilla wafers.

I'm sure I can think of more, but right now I'm stuck on bread pudding. I just LOVE bread pudding & wish I had some right now! :)

I'm writing down ideas--thanks!

I think I'd better describe more clearly what I'm after though. ;)

Professionally, I spend hours & hours every week making lovely desserts for customers, including specialty desserts for a local restaurant. It's my job, and it takes up lots of my time. While I enjoy sharing the "fruits of my hands" with others, I do occasionally grow weary of being in my kitchen.

It's been my habit to provide desserts for Sunday night church. Typically, I make something like black forest layer cake, bread pudding with creme anglaise, or fruit cobbler with mascarpone whipped cream, or flourless chocolate cake with bittersweet chocolate ganache drizzle.

In looking to simplify one Sunday a month, I've been making the first Sunday night of every month root beer float night. The floats are great because I don't have to prepare anything. All I have to do is pop into the store on the way.

What I'm looking for is something (like the root beer floats), where I don't really have to do any work to make it happen.

I'm open to more ideas. :bigear: (Though I very much appreciate all of the suggestions given so far!)

A warm tapioca? It can be made/served in a crock pot, and not a lot of work.

Store bought brownies and a scoop of ice cream?

Ding, ding, ding!

I believe we have a winner here, folks! :hurray:

This would probably work, if I can find store bought brownies at a reasonable price, and if I drizzle chocolate sauce over the top. And add whipped cream. ;)

Now all I have to do is convince myself I don't need to make warm homemade brownies, and I don't have to make my regular hot fudge sauce recipe, and that squirty whipped cream from a can is an acceptable substitute for freshly whipped. I may be one of those perfectionistic, overachiever types...:001_huh:

I agree with Peppermint White Chocolate. Picture oodles of whipped cream covered with crushed peppermint candies. Or some kind of Eggnog concoction. Or hot apple cider. Or Roasted Marshmallow drink... Imp & I saw that last week at Montana's. :drool5: It looked lovely and it was considered a dessert drink.

There are some great brownies and hot fudge sauces you can buy, but I would make fresh whipped cream in a cream whipper rather than buy the stuff in the can. It's awesome! And, almost no work.

You could also doll the brownies up by putting crushed peppermint candies, or chopped Andes mints, etc., as a side option. Or flavor the whipped cream with cinnamon. For those days that you feel like tinkering.....
