CourtneySue
I'm getting to the end of AAS Level 1 with my 6 yo and he seems to have trouble remembering the rules. In fact, I'm having trouble remembering the rules ;-) Have any of you who have used the program had this problem? Does it get better in the next level? Thanks for any input you may have!! boscopup
Are you reviewing them at the beginning of each step? I think my son remembered them better than I did. :tongue_smilie:
KristenR
If we were running into that problem I think I would try to build in extra reviews and practices. I could tell when my dd needed some extra work with the rules on ending a word in k or ck so we pulled out a dry-erase board and did a sort of hangman game with it. We do spelling M,W,F here so I do reinforcement games on one of our left over days- whether its a Tues or Thursday or even a weekend day. I try to make it very "play/game" based. KristenR
Oh, I just remembered one fun game we did earlier on on AAS- it maybe fun for you to try and incorporate something different. We made pudding bags here when we were starting out with smaller words. I bet it could easily be converted to larger sandwich bags. Or just the original suggestion of writing with whipped cream or shaving cream.
CourtneySue
Thanks for the ideas. I think maybe we haven't been reviewing them enough. I don't always do all the recommended reviews at the beginning. That was probably okay early on, but more necessary now that things are getting more complicated. KristenR
Even spend a whole scheduled spelling lesson on review once in awhile. Whenever things seem to be coming at us fast and seems like we've covered some meaty topics, I use one of our days solely as a review and we don't go over anything new. CourtneySue
Thanks, Kristen! I think for a while I wasn't doing a lot of review because everything seemed to be coming quite easily for him, but now, as things are becoming a bit more complicated, I can see that he needs it. tammyw
We don't go over the rules but we probably need to start doing that going forward as the rules get harder. I was just thinking the other day how helpful it would be if we had a book that listed all the rules in one spot. I think that's a big reason I don't do it. CourtneySue
That would be helpful. I think one of my problems is that I'm not always using the cards, since the words are listed in the book. I also wish they were put to song or written in a catchy way that were easier to remember. I suppose I could do this myself. Has anyone else tried doing that with AAS? I know that's what PR does, which is why I think it's so effective. A friend of mine who uses PR says that even her younger kiddos know the rules because of this.
AnointedHsMom
We do every card behind the review tabs every day. They don't get moved to the mastered tab until there is no hesitation on remembering them and they also aren't missing them when working with the same rule in their other work. One of the strengths of AAS is the review. If you aren't doing the daily review and using the cards at all times I highly recommend doing that. It's doubtful to me you can get all of what AAS offers without them. It takes me only a few minutes to do the review. HTH!
boscopup
I didn't use the word cards either, but I did use the key cards, phonogram cards, and sound cards. Definitely worth using them.
