CLBMom
We are currently considering getting a new computer as a family gift for Christmas. Our current one is a 5 year old desktop that doesn't work half the time. Kids (ds10, dd7, ds4) want a laptop. They are currently in private school, we plan on starting hsing next fall. Right now the two oldest have homework assigned online at least twice a week, plus research and reports that have to be done. I like the idea of a laptop and it being so portable, but am concerned about it getting broken. Also they use MAC computers at school which we can't afford at Christmas. We could with tax return but I'm not sold on them either lol. Can someone give me some suggestions and point me in the right direction? Thank You! AK_Mom4
Your best bet is to dit down and list the pros and cons for your family. Desktops are cheaper than laptops - you can get more machine for your money. But the desktop is pretty much tied to one location. The laptop is SOOOOO convenient to be able to take your computer somewhere else - sit with your feet up in your recliner while posting on here for example. Probably the best argument, though, is that for under $500 you can get a pretty hopping desktop machine right now. Expect even better sales to come up in the next 30 days. Laptop prices are good, but not quite that good.
Mama2Many4
For the school use, I just bought a new desktop. It lives in the dining room/school room. I have a personal laptop that is just mine that I just bought. I prefer a laptop. With the upgrades made now, the ram and hard drive are much bigger. Tough call. AngieW in Texas
We've bought most of our computers (desktops and laptops) from http://www.woot.com Make sure to check the ratings of any computer you find there. They often have refurbished computers at great prices. They've even had refurbished ipod touches there priced lower than the apple refurbished website. I've bought two of them that way. I prefer desktops.
