Joker
How cold is too cold for a small, short hair, terrier type dog? My neighbor has had their two small ones out in their backyard on a tether for at least three hours. They're just laying in the grass yapping every now and then. They stay inside all day and have been put out at night for a few hours for about the last month or so. The temps have dropped for our area (north Florida) and we were out tonight in jackets and pants. Two hours ago, according to my car, it was about 50 outside. I feel really bad for the dogs and am upset with the neighbors (and we're thinking of confronting them or making a phone call) but wanted some perspective. Is it too cold or does the hive thinks its fine and I'm just worrying too much?
ktgrok
Low fifties or below would concern me for a small dog that is not acclimated to the cold.
FlyingMOm
about 50 outside... Is it too cold or does the hive thinks its fine and I'm just worrying too much? I think you are worrying to much. 50 degrees is not to cold for most dogs.
KathyBC
They've been outside every night for a couple of hours? They should be fine. 50 degrees is not too cold.
Once Again
I had a short haired small terrier mix that weighed about 15 pounds. The veterinarian said she could stay outside as long as it did not get below 12 degrees F. Little dogs are tougher than we think.
awtl
I wouldn't worry about them being outside for a couple of hours at 50 degrees. It's good that you're concerned about the dogs. Little dogs can get hypothermia easily, but I think they're okay at that temperature.

They took them inside about five minutes ago (just about midnight here).
Claire in NM
I have a small mixed long hair terrier. At 50F, If the temp is going up (ie morning) , I would leave her out, AND if the temp is going down (ie evening), I would bring her in. I am okay leaving my dog out between 85F and 50F for extended periods of time. Claire in NM
unsinkable
I'd say above 50 is fine with no rain or wind. You get windchills in FL, right? ETA -- I'd watch out for dew forming, too. If they are in the grass, they can get wet when the dew forms and be really cold quickly.
