Mynyel
I need ideas here. I see a whole bunch of stuff on the net for it but I don't know what is a good product. My ds3.5 is sensory seeking, he needs deep muscle/joint activities. We had our first session yesterday and I can't believe how well he did. It was like he got "tuckered out" from the session without being tired. If that makes sense. Anyway, I am looking for a few things for him but don't know reputable sites. The one thing I am looking for right now is the Walbarger brush. I found them on Amazon but I don't know which ones are good quality and if they are a good price. I know there are those that are there and have been there :) So I need recommendations!
Momof3littles
Think things like table scrubbing, lifting baskets loaded with stuff to make them a bit heavy, pushing (a cart, a loaded laundry basket, a kid sized wheelbarrow), etc. Backpack, weighted vest, etc. Pulling a wagon. Swiffering or mopping with a child sized mop, or using a child-sized broom to sweep leaves or rake outside. Wheelbarrow walking. eta: pushing a toy shopping cart loaded w/ blocks. Do you have the book Sensational Kids or The Out of Sync Child has fun? http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/heavy-work-activities.html eta: there is some risk of injury but a child sized trampoline or bounce house is another idea. Run your ideas by your OT to make sure they fit your DC's individual needs. You can probably find a lot of things you already have at home that will work...just encourage the activities and set them up to meet his needs. Do searches for surgical brushes, vegetable brushes and nail brushes. They're all the same. You really only need a few as they last for years. Do read up on the method and have your OT train you. I agree with The Out of Synch Child as a necessary read. Check out http://www.flaghouse.com (under Sensory Integration: Deep Pressure) for some great sensory products. I've dealt with many companies, but this one is superb; the staff are very helpful. I bet he'd like the sensory sock/bag (they call it a Joint Co Motion) and a hug vest. Hope that helps! inmyopinion
One of the best items I introduced to my SPD son is gum! I never would let him have it before, but it not only has helped him with the motor difficulty he experiences, but it satisfy's his sensory need when he has to sit still. Your 3.5 might be a little young for that, but keep it in mind. We also bought a large exercise ball for him to sit on rather than a chair, which we love. As for the brush, our OT gave us a regular scrub brush that the hospital staff uses to wash and it works fine. We also use athletic compression shirts like "Under Armour" rather than the vest as it was less expensive and worked for us. One friend made her own weighted blanket and she said her son loves it. (it's a great way to get them to do joint compressions, when they don't want to.) a hoppy ball or a pogo stick, also will give a joint compression effect. a compression vest (as opposed to a weighted vest that can only be worn for limited time.) "compression" bike clothes also can help if they are tight enough - the challenge is finding them in small sizes. the brush is just a baby/surgical brush. It should be soft. my son destested the brushing protocol.
kathkath
We got these from IKEA. http://www.myfavoriteeverything.com/2010/favorites/family-favorites/ikea-ekorre-hand-rings/ I feed a long piece of fabric through it and tie it on to make a low swing where ds lies stretches out on his belly and pulls himself around with his arms.
