jenn-
I would like to have some fingerless gloves but don't have the skill to knit them or the time to buy them (I'd like them in the next hour or so my hands are freezing). I have some cheap knit gloves from Walmart (those thin black things they sell for $.99). If I cut the fingertips off, will the rest of it just come apart? Would using a set of pinking shears make a difference?
ashfern
It really depends on the material. If it's nylon (man-made) you can singe the ends very carefully with a flame. It will melt & not run. The other thing you could do is sew a little seam.

Aurelia
They probably will unravel, but will do so slowly unless you decide to wash them, or if you decide to pick a the loose threads.
jenn-
The pair I found 2 of (why don't they ever stay with their partners) are 100% arcylic. Will that melt or burn?
learningmama
The cheap ones will unravel slowly. In high school I played clarinet in the marching band and we needed bare fingertips to play. Many of the girls would cut the tips off their gloves to stay warmer. We also wore white cotton gloves for performances with the tips cut off. Acrylic will melt into plastic. It won't be pretty and it might stink, but that would keep it from unraveling. ETA: you might want to practice melting the ends on the cut off pieces to see how much heat to apply, how long, etc.
jenn-
Thank you all for replying. I never got the nerve to try it. In the end the extreme chills would not have been helped anyways. I apparently had spiked a nice fever to go with my scratchy throat.
mcconnellboys
I have cut those off before, and they do begin to unravel some, but they don't just fall apart....
