Writing road to Reading?

I was wondering if there is anyplace where I can get a copy of the spelling rules in the Writing Road to Reading? I ordered this from the library a while ago, and now when I went to reorder it the book has been paid. The librarian told me that means they no longer can get the book. I was thinking of using the rules with my kids to help with their spelling, but I don't want to spend the extra money if I don't have to right now.

Thanks, that was just what I was looking for. I was thinking about using the spelling rules with my girls, should I also have them use the markings? What are the reasons behind this? If you use the markings do they help your kids, and how?

You'd need to read the book to understand the Spalding Method and why the markings are used. :-)

Writing Road to Reading is the manual for the Spalding Method. You can read about Spalding here.

If you wanted to do Spalding with your dc, you'd need the manual, the phonogram cards, and the Spelling Assessment Manual (although you could get away without that).

I think the markings are part of the meat of the program. You mark up the words to show why the words are spelled the way they are. Or if a word is a "rule breaker", the markings show how. By analyzing the word, the child is learning how to spell the word.

The markings are very simple, really. I'd highly recommend just getting the book if you can. Used copies are easy to come by. I got mine for $8 from a homeschool consignment store (trying to support the store so it doesn't close!). You can probably get it for even less than that. I got the blue/green 4th edition. That edition includes phonogram cards that you tear out (though if buying used, make sure they are present before buying). I see some listings for around $5-6 shipped online, so as I said, it's cheap and easy to get. :)
