There is a test that my boy that is suspected of having PANDAS has had. It detects a strep infection in a certain number of days and I can't remember the name of it or how many days back it can detect. I think it looks at antibodies. I'm not aware of a blood test specific to diagnose PANDAS. I wish there was a better way of controlling it. So much relies on me being able to play detective successfully. Not sure if that helps. Plink
I was told by an infectious disease specialist that my DD probably has PANDAS. He said that they don't have any way to test for it, but there are tests for strep that help to support their suspicions. In all reality, some doctors still don't even believe it exists so finding treatment is an uphill battle. :001_huh: Baffled with you :001_huh:
Scarlett
Ok, thanks you two. I remember now the doctor said he wanted to test for the antibodies that might indicate he has had strep that went wrong or some such. The test is negative, so that is good. Miss Peregrine
My dd's strep test came back negative, too, but I am sure she had PANDAS.

That's the test my 12 had. Glad that came up negative. When I was in High School I had strep that went wild and infected my neck muscles. Can't remember the medical term but it was considered rare. A round of antibiotics and I was good as new but man was it scary. I hate strep. I'm not at all surprised my kids are sensitive to it. abbeyej
There's no test for PANDAS, but there are blood tests that look for antibodies from recent infection. The tests aren't tremendously reliable though, since antibiotics can suppress the antibodies and other factors can also cause negative results. I do not think his doctor really thinks it is PANDAS, but says he does the test routinely with certain symptoms. When he told me he was going to order a test for an auto-immune syndrome I said, 'Oh PANDAS?' He looked surprised and impressed. :D
sbgrace
Other infections, not just strep, can cause PANDAS symptoms. My friend's daughter sudden, severe onset of OCD symptoms as in PANDAS and it wasn't strep--it was another infection. Antibiotics did stop the symptoms but they came back when she went off. She still had the bacteria. They did a longer course and the bacteria was gone and so were her symptoms off antibiotics. If you want my friend to contact you let me know. She's a member here but rarely on. I know she would share her experience and what doctor she used and how that worked. She could not find help with physicians in her area I know.
