s/o Christmas list - Tell me why I want a Keurig!

Recommended Posts

I mean, I already want one, but I'm really not even sure why they are better than a 'traditional' coffee maker. Our current maker has seen better days so replacing it with something this Christmas makes sense. DH and I both like our coffee, so it would get much use.

Do you toss your 'traditional' coffee maker when you get a Keurig?

Do you have both around for any reason?

I am very "gadget ignorant". I have never seen a Keurig in use, never even seen it up close, never had coffee from it. I just know it seems like a cool concept.

So I guess after all this rambling, what I'm trying to say is -- what is a Keurig and why should I have one? :bigear:

Thanks!!!

I have the cheapest coffee maker from Walmart. It has an on off switch as its only "feature."

However I think a Keurig would be just plain fun. When my dd15 was in the hospital this summer for a burst appendix (9 nights), every morning, I took my insulated mug to the parents' lounge where they had a Keurig (unlike the home model, it actually had a water tube that was tapped into the water lines so you never have to fill it with water). It was just such a blast, putting in a little cup (they only had one brand -- so the choice was regular or decaf) pressing GO and having yummy coffee just the right temperature and strength. Despite the stresses of having a hospitalized child, I was spoiled with that coffee maker. I drank more coffee in those 10 days than I probably did the rest of the summer!!

If I ever got one for home, I'd hang on to the old Walmart maker because it would be better for a group of people. It would be more economical and faster to just have that pot of coffee ready.

And if I got a home one, I'd get the basket that allows you to brew your own coffee. I read reviews and the one from Keurig is not the best reusable cup -- I can't remember what the better one was but I remember reading reviews on Amazon that the other brand of reusable cup was better for whatever reason.

Thanks for this. I'm going to mention to dh to put one in my stocking. But if it's not the best...

I bought dh a Tassimo last year fro Christmas. For what he wanted it was the better thing - lattes and espressos and stuff. But the girls and I (yes I let the girls drink coffee) like flavored coffee. So the Tassimo was ok, but I wanted a Keurig. Dh bought me one a week or so ago.

The K takes a while longer to warm up, but both take about the same amount to brew the cup. K definitely has more options. Once I get the reusable basket, coffee will be cheaper. Since we only drink one cup each when we make it, a single cup brewer makes sense.

I still have our old 12 cup pot for when we have a group over. But honestly either we don't have groups over or I forget to offer coffee cause we haven't used it.

We have a Keurig and a regular coffee pot. Someone around here is always drinking coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

Usually, I'll brew some flavored coffee in the big pot. Then if the dc want tea, another flavor of coffee, or chocolate, we use the Keurig.

Or, on mornings when we're going to be gone, I'll use the Keurig for my to-go cup o' joe. :001_smile:

We haven't touched our big pot since we got our Keurig a year or so ago. We do use a lot of our own coffee in it - it's just sooo good in the Keurig! Always super fresh, of course, but also much better than fresh coffee made other ways (we've done electric drip, old fashioned drip, french press).

dh uses our coffee only. dd and I use a mix of our coffee and k-cups. We very rarely get coffee "out" since we have it.

Same here. We've found a few coffees we like (Tully's French Roast is the current fave, but I'm open to suggestion), and the Keurig has made it much easier to resist the Starbucks on every corner. Especially after I heard about Trader Joe's powdered chai latte; tastes just like the 'bucks kind, even though it's just-add-water.

You absolutely want a Keurig! We bought one of the very first ones and are now on our second Keurig. After years of using them, we still look at each other and say, "This is one of the best things we've ever bought".

1. I drink decaf (other than my Kona which I adore) but hated the hassle of making and wasting a pot of coffee just for me.

2. Hubby liked lattes and bought an expensive Italian espresso machine. (He has since realized that he and dairy are not good friends. Can you guess which one sits in the corner gathering dust?)

3. We take it on vacations and camping trips with us (our glass french press is just too fragile, not to mention the mess of the grounds). It's the Keurig and the pillows from home when we travel.

4. The kids love hot chocolate (dd-milk chocolate; ds-dark chocolate)

5. When SIL visits- she loves her hot tea.

6. We have the house that is the best for large family gatherings and regularly host Thanksgiving, Christmas and church gatherings. It easily takes care of 35+ people and they LOVE the Keurig. We splurg and buy the seasonal coffees with spices like eggnog flavoring and they love it. (I donated my fancy timey-wimey drip coffee maker to Goodwill after my first Christmas party.)

7. It has a timer and is on, ready to go, when I wander into the kitchen. I have my Kona faster than I can pry my eyes open. Hubby has his Italian Roast.

I LOVE MY KEURIG!

Coffee preference can be so personal to people.:D

I don't like all the zillions of little plastic containers. The first part of environmental responsibility is Reduce. Then Reuse & Recyle.

I buy various coffee beans and brew up whatever I'm feeling that day. (Well, dh brews and grinds lol) . Our unbleached coffee filters are composted in our buns. The coffee grounds go around the hydrangea. In winter, in the compost.

The very best coffee is in small batches (single brew) because after about 10 minutes the condensation that returns to the pot is bitter. That is why Starbucks does so well. Because it is intentionally fresh. It really makes a difference in flavor, and the stronger you like your coffee, the more difference it will make. That is Keurig's strength. I don't have one, I am too cheap, but I only make two cups of coffee at a time in my pot. One for me and one for DH.

You don't want a Keurig. Drip coffee is crap. Buy a french press and if you want little flavoured thingies, you can get that stuff in any grocery dairy case.

I am not interested in Keurig at this point but I have to say that my French Press coffee cools down way too fast, so I am still doing the drip method because the pot stays hot for 2 hours. I suppose I could pour it into a thermos but mornings are hard enough for me without the added work...:001_smile:

I don't drink coffee. My husband only drank iced coffee or lattes from Starbucks once in a while.

I bought a Keurig with money I received for my 40th birthday. Best thing ever. My husband now makes an iced coffee every morning to take in his travel mug.

I make iced tea for myself. I just put a teabag in a mug and use the Keurig to brew the hot water directly into it. Then I pour that over my ice.

The best thing it has been for is when we have guests. I never remembered to make coffee when company came over because I don't drink it. Now everyone can make what they want (decaf or rgular or flavors) and all I do is check the water level. Others who have a Keurig also will refill the water when needed, so I usually don't have to deal with it. It even worked great at a 50 person party we had.

People also tend to get very excited when they come over and can get a cup of coffee from the Keurig. I don't know if it tastes better or they like the novelty of it.

We started out with one Keurig for both DH's coffee and my morning tea. After about a week I was feeling resentful that my tea was tasting like his coffee, despite regular rinsing. So he bought me my very own for tea :). He has one for coffee and loves it and I have one for tea and love it. The kids use mine for hot water for instant cereal in the morning and they love the hot chocolate and hot apple cider. I have the brew your own cup and use it a lot for loose tea. DH does not use the brew cup for his own coffee as he has found so many coffee flavors that he loves ready to do. HTH!

I'm the only coffee drinker at home, and only drink 1-2 cups, and I've found that getting the little pods for a small drip-coffee maker works well, and ends up being cheaper than buying beans and grinding them, because they don't go stale before I end up using them. The Senseo pouches don't have separate little cups-they're just ground coffee already in a filter.

Check Sams Club. I bought my Keurig there for $129. It came with the Kcup for your bagged coffee (normally sells for around $17 seperate) and it came with 36 Kcups of different coffee. It also has the water filter with it. We love, love ours. Oh, and register at Keurig and they will send you a coupon code for 2 free boxes of coffee when you buy 2 boxes of coffee. I ended up with 96 kcups for $29. Not bad.

We got the Cuisinart Keurig for Christmas last year. I love it because we drink a lot of flavored coffees and I can choose whatever flavor I want instead of whatever dh decided to make that morning. I also tend to drink decaf and dh doesn't. I do find that I drink more coffee with it and dh drinks less. Ours came with the cup to use our own coffee so we use it and the k-cups depending on what kind we want to drink.

They are an unconscionably wasteful product. Not cool.

Far better to get a French Press (or two) in appropriate sizes.

Do you really want to create that much plastic waste that comes from increasing scarce petrochemicals—not to mention the money that thereby makes it's way to some pretty unsavory regimes?

We need to get off this crack.

Nope, it's the best crack ever, and I won't give it up. It does have reusable filters, and I'm quite sure we ALL have guilty pleasures. I do my very best to be an overall responsible and caring person, but I admit it: not every single thing I buy is a green product purchased from a commune that pays higher-than-average wages and gives their profits to politically correct charities.

Drink all of your coffee. People in Africa are sleeping.

:iagree:

I drag my recycling bins out to the curb, turn the heat down and put extra layers on, walk through the house turning off lights, and reuse my copy paper. BUT, the only reason I have all this energy is because of my super cool multi-flavored options of minute-ready coffee!:D

Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone, but I use more than one square of toilet paper, too.

(OK, I'm being flippant. Must have had too much coffee today.)

I have the Zojirushi water boiler:

http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-CD-LCC40-4-0-Liter-Electric-Dispensing/dp/B00009K3TF/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1320455076&sr=8-13

It's always ready for tea, coffee, oatmeal, hot chocolate, plate warming, etc. I'm a tea drinker, but DH brews coffee with a mug-sized French press. I may get him another high-speed coffee thing that a person once mentioned on these boards, but he'd still use the zojirushi for the water.
