momma aimee
Like a Pod or something -- something to put in your yard, fill up over time, then eventually move to a different place -- :bigear::lurk5::bigear:
bbkaren
When I was pricing storage units I found the Pod type units to be the most expensive, as well as the least convenient. We're moving from 1800 s.f. + basement, to about 1100 no basement, so we need a decent amount of storage space. We wanted free access to our belongings and with pods you have to call ahead so they can pull your unit out. We were considering a regular unit in a building but wanted our stuff to be handy and still secure since we don't live at our new place yet. There's lots of expensive tools and building materials we have to store there. We wound up buying a Conex box for $3900 (they also rent, on your land, for around $100 a month). It's 40 feet long by 8 feet wide. Pretty? No. And if you have particular neighbors or a hoa it probably won't fly. But it's been a gem of a buy for us; cheaper, bigger, and more solid than any shed we could find. Edited November 4, 2011 by bbkaren

Guest basetraveler1
I found that portable storage is one of the most convenient ways to move. After they deliver the storage and you load it, they will pick it up and take it to their facility or to a new location. You can keep the portable storage there as long as you want. You can unload at your pace and around your schedule. You pay monthly for it anyways, so it's better to take advantage of that. Usually the price is not prorated, so you should ask about that beforehand. It seems that you would benefit from using portable storage. Being able to pack at your pace and clear out the clutter for your house to show, is more than enough a reason to use portable storage. Some companies charge for keeping the storage for extended months. You want to ask about hidden fees to avoid extra costs on your bill. I had a great experience using the Mobile Attic company in SC. Tap
We had a friend who ended up buying a commercial box truck for this purpose. With the economy being so bad, and so many businesses going under, he was able to buy one for pretty cheap. When they are done with it, they will just sell it. So far, they are very happy with the purchase and even helped another friend buy one too for the same purpose.
Happy
Having a Pod in your driveway doesn't help with curb appeal when showing your home. If you use one, fill it up and move it off your property as soon as possible. We've always just rented a storage unit close by. It's not hard to make a run or two a day as you declutter. (I say that...it depends on the ages of your dc and how far away the storage unit is...all kinds of considerations now that I think about it.) I find I declutter more because I have to get the stuff into the van or pickup before the storage unit. When you are ready, just empty it into the new house.
