fruitofthewomb
I would like to start a biblical Christmas unit after Thanksgiving with my DD6. I have a DD3 and DD1 also. I am looking for something like advent. I use FIAR right now so something like that would be fine. I really want to keep the focus on Jesus this Christmas and I want to incorporate it into our school and non school life. Anyone have suggestions? Rikki06
We do the ADVENTure of Christmas by Lisa Whelchel and it's kinda fun but not a lot to it. I downloaded some things off Currclick so I'm hoping ones of those will be meatier...just because it IS hard to focus on Jesus during the season. PeterPan
Ooo, 3 little ones and you want to do a month of Christmas! Well we like to do stuff so much, we decided to start earlier this year. We started this past week in fact. Dd spent the whole week making ornaments. She'll probably make more next week, then at the end of the week she'll start decorating. And the following week hopefully we'll get serious about our homemade gifts. I guess my point with that is instead of feeling constrained to do a unit study, you might just free yourself up to DO fun stuff. Make a list of all the stuff you want to do, all those fun crafts and recipes, and DO them! :) There are lots of nice advent books. With kids that little, I'd probably just have a stack of Christmas picture books and read some each day. There are advent-themed read aloud books (Jotham's Journey, Bartholmew's???). We did one by Sanseri at that age. They're all fine, but really I think the different picture books would be good enough. Have fun with it! :)
momsuz123
I really want to do the same thing with my kiddos too. I am new to hs and now realize that along with how much we love hsing, how much we can cover in a shorter time. That being said, I really want to slow down and just enjoy more of hs. A Christmas themed unit that lasts at least a month is what I am looking for. Emphasis on Jesus and the true meaning. I am thinking of doing a picture book a day about Christmas (in addition to all our other reading). Crafts, songs, some fun movies, getting involved with a soup kitchen or something like that also. I would love to hear more ideas.:bigear:
Alice
One of our favorite traditions is a Jesse Tree. This is the one we use but there are many many online you can choose from that might fit your particular denomination better. https://www.rca.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=1602 I made very simple paper ornaments and we've used those for many years. Here is a blog post I wrote about it with a picture. http://supratentorial.wordpress.com/2009/12/05/advent-jesse-tree/ The other thing I have done that we've loved is to wrap enough Christmas books to open one each day. It mostly just takes planning ahead as I have about half the books from ones we've collected over the years and about half are library books. The wrapping just makes it fun from them and it's something we look forward to every day in December.
