Vicodin and Benadryl Interaction?

Recommended Posts

My dh picked up a Vicodin prescription (one 5-325mg tablet every 6 hours) for me today and I forgot until tonight that I should have called and asked if it's okay to take my normal 50mg dose of Benadryl as well-to help me sleep at night and for allergies. According to this: http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=896-1617,71-747 I'm thinking it's okay, but does anyone know for sure/BTDT. Thank you!

Both of those drugs tend to make people sleepy.

The site you linked says there is a moderate risk, and that you should be monitored for continued breathing. Personally, I'd shelf the benedryl and check out a non-drowsy antihistimine instead... possibly Claritin? I think the drug name for that is Loratadine.

But if the vicadin knocks you out, maybe you don't even need the antihistimine until you wake up? LOL

Just my own 2 cents there. :)

Does your insurance have a nurse line?

Do you have Walgreen's where you are? We have a few 24 hour pharmacies here and they are always willing to answer questions, especially about interactions.

ETA: I'd check it out before mixing them if I were you. Better to be a safe, stuffed up insomniac.

Thank you. You're right-I'm feeling more out of it as the night progresses and I def. don't think I'll need the extra sleep help! I think I have some Claritin here...will check as it would be nice.

Thanks Cheryl. I called the only Walgreens around (about a half hour away) and they were closed. Tried to google a 24 hour pharmacy with no luck...we're probably just too rural I'm guessing. I'm feeling pretty drowsy at the moment, so I'm just going to go to bed!
