Kirch
Those are incredibly fascinating. I wonder if some of the info is off, though--there is NO WAY that #9 (Elizabeth Singleton) was 22 at the time of her arrest (DOB 1905, mug shot dated 1927). She looks like she's pushing 60. Maybe in her 40's if she'd had a hard life (which I'm sure she did). I also think it's too funny that they took the full-length photos with hats on. :D Edited November 3, 2011 by Kirch

Rosie_0801
I don't imagine anyone looks good in mug shots. ;) You wouldn't imagine so, but I've seen some really friendly looking mug shots! I'm wondering about the bigamists. How many husbands can a person want? Rosie Edited November 3, 2011 by Rosie_0801

pqr
That was fascinating. Thanks for sharing! I believe divorce was not easily come by back then, especially to the poor. I'm sure some of these women who were charged with bigamy had actually left their husbands without obtaining a proper divorce, then married another. It is my understanding that what you describe was fairly common.

BatmansWife
When was the hairbrush invented?? Seriously! Talk about bad hair days. Old photographs like this are so intriguing to me. I'm always so fascinated by them. #8 and #18 must have shopped at the same store; their outfit is the same. :D #13 was a surprise to me. Eugenia Fallen; alias Henry Crawford. I wonder if her wife Annie knew she was really a woman when Annie married him......er, I mean her. I wonder if Emily Gertrude Hemsworth, #10, had postpartum depression? One of the woman pictured looks like a lady at our grocery store. :001_huh: Was it just me, or did #17 look like a guy in drag? I wondered why this particular picture creeped me out. You are right....she really does look like a he.
BatmansWife
Fascinating. More....http://www.happy-pixels.com/2011/06/22/vintage-mugshots/ Some of these men looked rather dapper. I wish there was something to read about each one. Look at #18's hair. It's a bit reminiscent of when my mom had a beehive. I wonder if that was intentional....or if it was reeeeaaallly windy that day. The one right under Mr. Beehive is funny too.....they actually wrote right on his photo: "this man refused to open his eyes".
kalanamak
How interesting. I picked out the ones with drug problems, and I think I see some mental illness. awisha.
Love looking at old photos. The guys are certainly dapper and I wish some of the guys nowadays would dress like this. radiobrain
Other than being fascinating, these are astonishingly beautiful photographs. Glad to have a 4 x 5 camera and a working darkroom in my house. It is inspiring to see such beauty rise out of that sorrow. If they only knew random people would be looking at these shots of them so far in the future. And a show! Imagine!! Lorien
I wonder if it's possible that #s 11, 14, 24, 30, and 31 were given a jacket to wear over their regular clothing? Possibly a police jacket, or something the police used for whatever reason (possibly covering inappropriate clothing). They all look as though they're wearing the same, or very similar jackets. Their messy hair and wrinkled clothing might be due to having been questioned for a long time before the shots were taken, or even having been arrested the night before and been forced to sleep in their clothes. I don't know if that's possible, but if so, they wouldn't be looking their best! And I wonder if the difference between the men and women is due to class - upper-class men and very poor women. Mommyfaithe
The men look mostly dapper...and groomed. WTH?? The women looked like they had been through the mill and back. Most of those guys look like they are posing for GQ, not a mug shot..... They do look mean, though. I find all the early photos make people look mean. Mommyfaithe
Very tough looking women living in tough times. Can't imagine what life was like back then. :iagree: My df and I were discussing how the " good ol' days". Were nothing such of the sort. They were the " hard old days". Where men, women and children were up against circumstances we could never survive. It made us think of how much better these days are...you know...with anti- biotics, vacuum cleaners, indoor plumbing , central heat and air, refrigeration, sanitation....and let's not forget hair product! saraha
I thought it was interesting that in some of the full length shots, the women were actually posing. Like with a foot turned out, or arms placed just so. I don't pose well for formal pictures so I know I wouldn't look good in a mug shot:001_smile:

Or were the poorer men's mug shots not worth saving? Or was there a lower rate of middle class women (lower rate than middle class men) turning to crime? Or maybe the women weren't typically involved in the crimes that had higher payoffs (i.e. robbery). Questions, questions! :D
