Do you love your dishwasher?

Recommended Posts

I mean the appliance kind. :tongue_smilie:

Our Frigidaire cheapie died this week. The motor that cleans the top rack died and it costs $120 for the part alone! The dumb thing was a point of contention between dh and me. I wanted to invest in a better one when we bought it 4 years ago, but didn't want the argument. So, I get to say, "I told you so"......while I'm handwashing all the dishes. :glare:

I'm leaning toward a Bosch or Kenmore. Kenmores have Bosch motors right now I hear. The online reviews are all over the place. I don't know what to think. How can one family completely love it and give it 5 stars and another loathe it to the point of asking if there is a rating lower than 1? It's the same machine!

We are looking to spend around $500. I want a white one and it needs to be quiet, but most of all it needs to clean the dishes. That's all I really want...clean dishes.

So, if you really like your dishwasher, I'd love your recommendations.

Or, if you absolutely hate your washer, I can start a list for the brands to avoid.

Thanks!

Signed,

Dish Pan Hands

We really like our Asko. It actually cleans the dishes, and we can fit a huge amount of things in it. All we do is scrape the plates - no rinsing.

That said, after several years of hard use, the little plastic wheels and things break sometimes. Dh bought quantities of these things on ebay, and just pops in a new one when something fails. You probably won't have this problem, because you won't be running your dishwasher as much as we do - 3-5 times a day, every day.

We bought our Bosch 3 or 4 years ago. During our recent kitchen remodel, it was the only thing we did not replace.

It's quiet and gets the dishes clean. The only drawback is it does not have a soft food disposal (not the model I have anyway). Not a big deal though as I've always scraped plates. Now I just scrape them a bit more carefully.

I have a kennmore something or other and I love it. I told the guy at Sears that I wanted any dishwasher as long as I didn't have to wash the dishes before I wash the dishes. So, I have a kind where you don't have to rinse.

That thing is a workhorse. It is about 6 years old and I still don't have to rinse the dishes before I put them in the washer. I will scrape them off a bit but that is all. I toss cereal bowls in there with whatever the boys left in there. I don't even dump the soggy cereal in the disposal. No problems ever.

I got a Bosch about a month ago. So far, so good. It cleans the dishes well and is fairly quiet. It was kind of a pain to install (dh did it, but it took several trips to the hardware store to get the right stuff). It's nice though, and I'm happy with it.

I dislike our Bosch. It is VERY quiet, but it does not clean well. The detergent doesn't rinse completely so we often have to run the thing twice. The salesman sold it to us claiming we didn't need to rinse the dishes. That has not been the result. Even rinsed dishes come out dirty if only one dish isn't completely clean. Also, the dishes come out wet. I've come to expect plastic will be dripping wet and porcelain items must sit in the open air for thirty minutes or so immediately after the cycle ends. I wouldn't buy another Bosch.

We purchased our Bosch 3 months ago, and it is amazing! Whisper quiet but incredibly powerful & effective- I use the AutoWash cycle and it senses (?!?) the best cleaning cycle. There has only been 1 time when it did not get the yuckiest, caked on grime off- honestly, its become a joke in that I just throw nasty pots in there as a 'test' (no pre-rinsing, soaking etc) and every.single.time it comes out clean.

I've never loved an appliance quite so much!!!

We got ours at Best Buy as an open box special, so saved 30% making it $500ish. Unsure of model though...Bosch has quite a range

I turn mine on at night and it stays shut, heat drying all plastic. We knew about this when we bought it, and everything is dry in the morning.

I've been through SO MANY appliances. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Bosch. By far it cleans better than Maytag, Kitchen Aid, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Frigidaire......we've had them all, they've all been junk. LOVE the Bosch.

I usually hate appliances. LOVE the Samsung refrigerator, hoping to love my Blue Star once it's installed.

We LOVE our Bosch. It's so quiet it's hard to tell it's even running, and it gets the dishes super clean. I am careful not to "overstuff it," but load it correctly (and it is rather flexible) and it does extremely well.

Best of all . . . we got it at Lowe's as a "scratch and dent" because they had thrown away the box (it was a floor model) for more than half off, so it was less than a so-called cheap model, with free delivery. There was not a thing wrong with it; we even got the full warranty. We were so happy that we ended up buying our stove the same way!

:iagree:

Mine are only wet if I open it right away. I almost never do that because they are also HOT.

It truly does get so hot they will dry if you just leave it shut at least for a couple of hours. It seems counter intuitive, but it's true. I run mine late to keep dh from "helping" by opening the dishwasher so they can dry. :001_rolleyes:

Bosch. Love it and we don't rinse.

(If your Bosch isn't cleaning well maybe contacting an appliance repair guy would help? We had some problems at one point and had to get our top rack spinner thing-I think that's the technical term-replaced. Our detergent wasn't rinsing and the dishes weren't getting clean hence the call, but after the replacement, perfection!)

Yes, I do. :001_wub:

It's a mid-range Whirlpool. It holds an enormous load of dishes, it's pretty darn quiet, and it always gets things clean. It's about seven years old now and going strong.

Oh, and I only rinse dishes because with just two of us in the house, the dishwasher might not be run for several days. Othewise, if I'm going to be filling and running it, I just scrape off the big stuff.

And I was looking in a Bosch at the store the other night, and its interior is not as big as my Whirlpool's. I guess it's because the Bosch has more insulation, but I sure do like the spaciousness of my Whirlpool.

Bosch is winning so far with 7 yea votes (and 1 nay). Kenmore is second with 2.

Bosch ladies, were yours midpriced models if you remember? There seems to be better scores with the higher priced versus the lower ones. I'd like to stay in the middle range.

Thanks for all of your responses!

I've been driving myself crazy trying to make the "right" decision. With so much out there and so many varying reviews, it's harder than I thought it would. And I don't want another dud.

I have a Whirlpool. It is the second or third one that we have had and always liked. We did get an extended warrenty on the one we have and very glad we did as there has been some things that have needed repair but it washes good, holds a lot of dishes, is quiet, and is fairly quick.

My middle son and his wife bought a Bosch this summer and they really like it.

Bosch -- we've had it for about a year. Cleans really well, lots of room inside, good range of cycle options, and the biggest plus: I can be standing in front of it and not hear it running. I can only tell by looking for the red light on the floor.

there have been a few times I was standing RIGHT in front of my Bosch asking dh if he heard something. I swore I heard something. He pointed to the dw. :blushing: It's THAT quiet. I was right in front of it and couldn't figure out if I was hearing something.:001_huh:

We have a new Bosch. Midrange priced.

Love how well it cleans!

Dislikes: the button to turn it on seems flimsy. Also, the bottom rack configuration doesn't work that well with my usual load . Dishes are fine, but pots and pans fit oddly- they're all tilted because the tines are angled. But maybe that's why it cleans so well.

Still, I'd buy it again. It works great.

Answering the question about price: ours is a mid-to-upper price range model, but we paid less than $300 for it by taking the floor model without the cardboard carton :). There were no nicks, scratches, dents, or dings inside or out, and all the buttons work just fine over a year later, and it came with the full warranty in place. Looking at it in our kitchen, you cannot distinguish it from one that we would have paid full price for.

Somehow, we managed to live very full lives without a large cardboard carton around our dishwasher :).

We have a family friend who always researches his purchases to the nth degree. What he learned was that the lower end frigidaires were the absolute worst dishwashers but the mid-range Fridgidaires were great and more affordable that other mid-range brands while just as effective.

We have the low-end Frigidaire and i LOATHE it! I frequently have to hand wash dishes after the dishwasher because it not only doesn't clean them it re-deposits stuff on them that won't come off if you just run the dishwasher again. We have tried every detergent from cheap to expensive to hand made. Nothing works. But we are moving soon so we aren't replacing it.

Good luck to you!

We vacation at a house that has an upper end 3yo GE....it is the worst dw I have ever used and it takes For.ev.er. to wash a load.

We have had 2 Whirlpool Golds. They have both been great. One for 7 years (working great when we moved) and our current one for 10 years.

They are not super quiet, but not very loud at all. We scrape, and don't rinse unless it is potatoes (leaves a grit behind) or sometime like melted cheese.

We never use the 'heat to dry' cycle. We let them air dry in the machine. They come out so hot from the wash cycle that they dry on their own in very little time. 10-20 minutes max.

Nice control options, tines that have various positions and holds a lot of dishes.

Mine was $700. It was not one of the higher end models if I recall correctly.

Mine is two levels down from the 2011 top models. Our salesman said the only difference between mine and the two top was a cycle I'd NEVER use (I think it was crystal or something like that and I'm sorry, Waterford and our other stuff need to be handwashed) and more insulation for soundproofing. DH and I both giggled the first time we ran it because we can't hear our model go. So are the two top models sound vorexes or something??

Love it! Yes, the dry cycle takes a bit to get used to, if you are used to having a dry cycle. But i agree with the previous posters who say just give it enough time for the water to evaporate off. I completely love it!

We got ours new off of Craigslist. There was a guy who does high end scratch and dent. This machine was perfect, even had the little packages of soap, etc., and came with a full factory warranty. It was a $1k model we got for $499. Look around, maybe you can get a deal like that!

Hate my Bosch.

12 service calls (extended warranty). They'd rebuilt most of it by the time they were through.

The clips for the inside racks have been replaced multiple times.

The soap dispenser has been replaced three times. That's just for the gel soap as it can't handle powder.

It's very quiet and cleans about as well as my cheap Whirlpool, but for the top rated dishwasher in Consumer Reports at the time it's been a big, expensive, and time-consuming disappointment.

I want to thank you all for the responses. I really, really appreciate your input.

The final tally (if you're interested):

Good machines:

Bosch (10 votes)

Asko

Kenmore (2 votes)

Whirlpool (2 votes)

Bad machines

Kitchenaid (3 votes)

Samsung

GE Profile (2-3 votes)

Bosch (2 votes)

We'll be checking out Boschs this weekend. Thanks for the help!
