S/O dying dog...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so the cAt thread got me thinking...well it's been on my mind the past week, but I thought I'd get thoughts and opinions here.

We have a 14 year old husky. She is progressively getting worse. She has a tumor under one shoulder, as far as I can tell it's about the size of a softball. It does cause her a bit of trouble walking, and she can barely walk around our short block, ten minutes. Our Samoyed, who is the same age, is doing great, there is a huge difference between the two. She is still eating fine, but just seems so uncomfortable. She is also having accidents in the house, something she has NeVER done. I do not see her getting any better. As it is, all she does is lay down all day, it's is hard for her to get on her feet. I had the groomed come the other day and even she commented on how sick she was.

We do not have a vet. They aren't vax'd, and have not had any health issues, until recently, when I discovered the tumor. This was about 2 months ago. Dh was traveling and I was moving myself and our three kids alone, so I didn't take her. I honestly feel like her life is declining fast, and do not want her to be alive and in pain. How do you decide? What is the criteria for putting an animal to sleep? I am so torn up a out it, I've had her since I moved out on my own, so much of my life has been with these two dogs. My kids are going to be devastated, as is my Sammy. When do you know for sure?

We knew for sure with Teddy the day the vet finally correctly diagnosed him as having lymphoma and liver cancer. There was no cure for it, he did not have long to live at that point, and he was in pain. Those were our criteria. That was one of the worst days of my life, and it was the worst day of my kids' lives.

(Prior to that, he had been treated for back problems with steroids and pain medication. According to the vet, the steroids masked the cancer symptoms. He did okay for 4 months, and he wasn't in pain. It didn't look like he would ever run again, but the prognosis was great, although wrong.)

I think you should take her to the vet and find out exactly what is wrong. You will find the strength to do what is best for your dog. :grouphug:
