....
So, I had just gotten out of the shower and was walking around my bedroom (in a robe ;)). I saw a very strange animal toy on the floor (my kids have tons of plastic animals). I thought, "That's a weird toy. Where did that come from?" It was perfectly motionless. I reached down to pick it up and it was a snake. Yeah, a real one. Public Service Announcement: Never try to pick up unidentified animals toys or figurines that you find on the floor. They may not be toys.

Stacia
That happened at my aunt's house when I was a kid. My young cousin went into the den & told her mom (my aunt), my mom, and grandmother that she had seen something on the kitchen floor. "It might be a toy. Or a string. Or maybe a snake." Turns out it was a baby copperhead.

....
P.S. So what did you do???? Is it out of your house now? It was a corn snake. My son has a pet corn snake and this is the second time it has escaped from its terrarium. The first time, we knew it had escaped and I tore the house apart looking for him. I finally found him at the bottom of the downstairs trash can. So, we bought him a HUGE terrarium and thought he would be happy. This time, we had no idea that he had escaped. That crazy thing found a way to get out of the new terrarium. I didn't recognize him out of his habitat. :D But, I thought it was a toy. Scared the daylights out of me! He's a really small snake, but still...I had no idea he was wandering around my bedroom!!!

There aren't enough shoes for something like that.
QuirkyKidAcademy
DH found a tarantula crossing our kitchen back in June. Good thing *he* found it or we'd have moved again - somewhere without giant hairy spiders. Copperheads, baby or not, would also cause me to move. At least the tarantula eats the scorpions that wander in. Or this one did eat - until DH smashed him.

Oh, we went into a bathroom at a park last year and there was a scorpion standing in the middle of the bathroom. I have 3 daughters and they just started all screaming.

They have rattlesnakes here in TX and we're really scared of those, too.

DH had come in from taking the garbage to the curb (it was close to midnight) and upon coming in, looked across the kitchen floor and thought, "Gosh, that dead banana peel wasn't there when I took out the garbage." Dead banana peel turned out to be a baby copperhead. DH almost :svengo:! He is deathly afraid of snakes. That little bugger decided to go hide behind some cabinets that were against the wall. After almost an hour, we finally got him out. I was just glad that DS was asleep or we would have been hearing him saying, "SCIENCE EXPERIMENT!" joannqn
Glad it was a harmless snake. My dad once loaned out a sleeping bag that had remains of a dead baby rat snake in it. Ooops! I once grabbed a grayish ball of fuzz that I thought was moldy candy in an old gingerbread house kit I hadn't put together (it was June). It was a mouse, a live mouse. It was funny because I immediately dropped it, screamed, and jumped up on the couch. DD, who was about 4 at the time, also screamed and jumped on the couch. She didn't know why she was scream, just copying mommy.

This is one of a million reasons there will never be a pet snake in my house. The only good snake is a dead snake.

AnnaM
This totally happened to me too! About 4 months ago I saw it on the floor and thought it was plastic so just stepped over it. On the way back out of my room I reached down to pick it up and it moved so I dropped it and it went behind my dresser. Took me about 30 minutes to gather up the nerve to get it out! Ours was a rat snake
Garga
Oooo! Watch out with the baby snakes. If they bite you it's worse than if an adult snake bites you. For some reason, the babies loose all their venom into you, while the adults hold some back. Don't think that because it's a baby, you can handle it. He doesn't even know how to constrict. He's a corn snake and usually very friendly. My son carries him around the house all the time and I'm wondering if he wasn't just looking for attention. He's so thin that he seems to be squeezing out of the crack between the lid and the cage - like he's pushing the lid a quarter of an inch and then squeezing through. I just didn't recognize him as he just stood motionless on my bedroom floor. One day (insert scary music), I'll end up opening the Keurig and he'll be in there...or the shades and he'll be in the window gazing longingly at the corn fields...:tongue_smilie: Just your friendly neighborhood corn snake.

cjzimmer1
After reading through this thread, I'm once again reminded that while I hate the snowy north, I will take a foot of snow any day over snakes, tarantulas, or scorpions especially in my house. I have a hard enough time dealing with daddy long legs and earwigs, I really couldn't handle the things you have mentioned here. I'm sorry for all of you living in warmer climates.
