1bassoon
We're new to this Robotics thing. . . .ds 15 is participating in his first team, and the competition is this weekend. Do families, as a rule, go to this all-day event? The reason I ask - it's over an hour away from our house, and I really don't want to drag the kids with me. What have y'all typically experienced? I'd like to be there if it would encourage my son, but if it's just a day of mostly waiting around, then. Meh. Rather just hear how it happens, and go if his team makes Regionals. Advice? :bigear:
JennW in SoCal
Is it a FIRST robotics competition? or Vex? Those are designed to be like athletic competitions, with cheering families and friends in the bleachers. And the cheering is just as loud and passionate as it is for a basketball game. It is a long day, you don't have to go for the entire thing, but it is very fun watching the competition, exciting even, and interesting to see the different approaches teams have in designing their 'bot. You can usually visit "the pit" where the different teams tinker and repair their robots between rounds. I went to all my son's competitions, and wound up volunteering at our local tournament. tex-mex
In our area, TX BEST encourages the whole family to go and cheer. It is part of the scoring for the team to compete. Plus it is fun! If it is a build day prior to the regional competition, your family does not have to attend. But do try to go to a local/county/regionals and enjoy! Teachin'Mine
I would think it would mean a lot to your son that you be there. Being he's 15, he'd likely not tell you this on his own. Go support him and have fun no matter whether his team makes regionals or not. Celebrate afterward. Everyone needs a cheering section in life. :)
1bassoon
Thanks, everyone! My inclination was to go, I just wasn't sure. . .we have to leave our house at 6 am for the drive, and I'm honestly on the fence about bringing the younger sisters. I think I'm going for the morning. . . . .it is a BEST competition, and it's been a GREAT experience for him so far! I'll let you know how it goes. . . . I think it would be great for your daughters to be there! Maybe they'll be inspired to get involved in the future. Or maybe it would be good cheerleading experience. angela in ohio
We've always gone to their competitions: FLL, FIRST, now VEX starting this weekend. It is a long day, but it's good for the rest of the dc to see it, I think, and it's helpful to get an idea of what they are talking about if you aren't involved with the team otherwise.
