Parker Martin
For past Christmases I've gotten my nephews an Erector set, Snap Circuits, Eyeclops, and the like. This year my budget is more limited. I don't like to buy DVDs or electronic games for kids' gifts. I especially like giving gifts that are hobby or science related. Any suggestions? My budget is approximately ten dollars, give or take a few, for each boy.

Xanadu
In my experience a $10 GC to a local bookstore (for comics or graphic novels..is always a good choice) Or a small lego set like the one linked here (You can always usually find a 70-100 piece kit for around $10..in several themes, like the ninja, starwars, castle set, and others) http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Star-Wars-Snow-Trooper/dp/B002RL7W9W/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1320183591&sr=8-11 If all else fails I know my 10 year old loves to get cash (it is a very hard age to shop for) This year mine is getting a gift certificate for a new skateboard (professional level, customized...hence the gc) and books....that's it. (from us at least)
In2why
X-Bugs---They come in a test tube and the kids that age love them. $7 The minature skateboards---They are 9.97 and there are 5 of them in a set. A gift certificate to Gamestop so they can pick out a video game. Gift card for songs from Walmart if they already own an MP3 player. I think my favorite gift for boys that age, if you live close enough, are experience gifts. Give them tickets to something that you will take them to, or just give them a card that tells them on such and such date you are taking them. There are many options. My oldest son and his GF are taking our boys to see the Harlem Globetrotters as their Christmas present, and it winds up being a present to DH and I since they are also keeping them all night. :D This is a hard age because they are almost over toys, but yet don't really care about clothes yet. Oh, one of my best scores at that price point was at the thrift shop. I found a huge bag of legos for $6. I brought them home, washed them and will put them in a plastic bin. You can sometimes find these on Ebay, but shipping might up the cost.

SunD
Stomp rocket? Depending on "maturity" level of course ... some 12yos would love it and some would pretend they thought it was a baby toy.

gardenmom5
a roll of duct tape. especially now it comes in colors and patterns. We gave some to our boys one year, and they were a huge hit. (but then, they were always walking off with ours.)
