LibraryLover
Of course that header should read if you *know* , not 'known'! Sorry! This is a question about modern epic theatrical Chinese films. So... please set grave concerns about artistic license and historical errors in movies aside a bit. :) R movie recommendations are fine, and your opinions and thoughts about the films are welcomed.OK. :) I am on a search for Chinese or other east Asian film (not documentary) titles. Not films made in American about Chinese history, but films made by east Asian artists. There are many epic films on Netflix, and I am trying to get a sense of what sort of order these might be viewed. I do have my list of Chinese Dynasties, but I am looking for helpful insider info. Thanks for any and all help! J-rap
We thought The Emperor and the Assassin was an excellent, historical Chinese epic. I'm not sure if this fits into what you are looking for or not, and we viewed it several years ago.

HSDCY
This is one of the most recent (2008) productions that based on ancient Chinese history (based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms). To me, the period of the "three kingdoms" is one of the most intriguing times of the Chinese history and this movie portraits that. Not only is the story itself epic, the theatrical scenes, the cast, and the cost of making the movie are all epic. Here is the Wiki article about it. It will help if you get the main characters' names before you watch it. There is another movie coming out soon called The Flowers of War. It's based on modern Chinese history in the pre-WWII days. Here is the Wiki article. You can find its trailers on YouTube if you are interested. Edited November 1, 2011 by HSDCY

LibraryLover
Responding to my own thread. In case other are interested: I recently found a site that lists east Asian/Chinese films by dynasty. I was pretty excited. ETA: Give me a minute, that was not the right link. Oops. ETA: OK. This should work: www.sensasian.com/games/1069.htm I haven't previewed them-- maybe Mulan, lol-- so I have no personal reviews. I am not even sure what it available to me, via ILL or Netflix. If anyone checks out the site and has seen any of these films, please share your thoughts with me.
