mom2bee
If you wanted to do Singapore Math all the way through (from 1st through HS??) what do you need, where do you start and how do you schedule it? I've heard so much about SM and I've looked at the books but I don't quite "get it" There are Textbooks, workbooks, Intensive practice books, challenging word problems and There is Primary Math 1A-6B, and I've seen Essentials mentioned also and I'm not sure what "US edition" vs "Standards edition" vs "CA edition" means...(Why does California have their own edition of an Asian curriculum:confused:) If you wanted to do the full Singapore curriculum, what do you get? I mean all the textbooks, workbooks, and the leveled supplements... I guess for elementary you would need: Primary Math US Edition work and textbooks 1A-6B (and Intensive Practice, Challenging Word Problems, Extra Practice US Editions.) but I'm not sure about the editions for the IP and CWP or if there ARE different versions... will someone enlighten me please? Okay, I'll take a stab... You choose either US Edition or the Standards Edition (which has topics aligned to CA State standards). Whichever one you use is up to you based on personal preference. US Ed is cheaper. Standards Ed has better instructors guides, full color textbooks, and more built-in review. For elementary, you need the HIG (Home Instructor's Guide), textbook, and workbook. If your dc need more challenge, or you want to go deeper, add IP and/or CWP books. They are just extra workbooks that cover the material at a deeper level. My kids don't like math enough to put up with doing extra work, so I tend to either the workbook or IP or CWP. I've heard of others that use all the books, but that would lead to mutiny at my house. :tongue_smilie: I've found that dc will get a good, conceptual knowledge of math without the supplemental books, but sometimes the extra challenge in IP and CWP make math more fun and interesting, especially for a child who understands math concepts easily. IP comes only in the US Edition, but I use it alongside the Standards Ed--the topics line up pretty closely. The new CWP books (the ones that are currently in print) state on their cover that they can be used with either Standards or US Editions. Let me know if I didn't answer all your questions...:001_smile: ETA: I haven't used the levels beyond Primary math, so I can't help you there. I think Essential Math is Kindergarten level (as is Earlybird Math). Edited November 1, 2011 by bonniebeth4
MamaHappy
Yep, what the pp said. :) And then after the 6A/6B books, you would move on to either the Discovering Mathematics or the New Elementary Math series (I've heard the Discovering Mathematics is the better option). I *think* either one of these options will take you through high school. So there you have it, a full K-12 Singapore math program. :)
