LuvingLife
Tis the season for colds!!:) I love fall and winter, but hate the fact that it brings viruses along for the ride. I have a weaker immune system than most people, so I am usually the first one to get sick in the house, or I will be the first adult to catch the virus from anyone else. I really hate this and I don't know what to do about it, so far I haven't been too bad, I changed my diet and have been eating a lot of Vitamin C, oranges, clementines, strawberries, grapes, apples, blueberries, peanuts, almonds, cashews, dried fruit, granola, bran, raisans, etc. It has helped, but I know I need a lot more, especially if I want to work in a hospital, I don't want to be sick all the time! Please let me know what I can do, I'd really appreciate it!:001_smile:

redheadmom
I have read that maintaining adequate dosages of Vit D will keep your immune system healthy, especially during winter months when we are less likely to get enough sunlight. http://www.oregonlive.com/health/index.ssf/2011/10/you_docs_vitamin_d-3_plenty_of.html
mcconnellboys
Those things all sound good. We drink an echinacea tea periodically during the winter. I get a flash pasteurized apple cider vinegar from a local farmer and drink that, too. If we think we're starting to get sick, we use homeopathic remedies, like Oscillococcinum, to help jump start our immune systems and fend off the illness.... Joker
My older dd returned to ps this year and was sick constantly until I started her on a daily probiotic and a daily dose of vitamin D3. We all started taking the same thing and haven't even had the sniffles since. I'm conviced they're helping.
sbgrace
The biggest thing you can do is have adequate vitamin D levels. Specifically, your 25(OH)D blood level should be in the 50-80 range. If you're not actively supplementing adequately/high you're very likely low. A healthy adult can safely take up to 10,000 IU per day regardless their actual blood level. As long as you remain under that you can dose high this winter (say 10,000 IU of D3--only D3 forms--at six days a week, none on the 7th day). You can sometimes get 5,000 IU at a drug store but you always can online. You may be taking some D but realize the average person needs 1000 IU per 25 pounds to maintain a healthy level. And studies have shown that even those with large amounts of sun are often low. My point is supplement D3 at a high (but safe) dose to boost your system. Other supplements proven to boost immunity in order of benefit/priority imo: Again, top priority and benefit is healthy vitamin D levels. 1. Probiotics--particularly those proven to boost immune systems specifically. Two great ones are Epicore and Florastor. I'd pick one and do it if you can. My son who has immune system dysfunction does both of them. 2. Zinc. I like Optizinc because it doesn't compete with iron levels in the body and it's much better absorbed. You can dose this or vitamin D "up" if you have exposure or the beginnings of a viral infection as well. 3. A colostrum product. Lifestyle stuff like handwashing, adequate rest, a healthy diet, etc. are important too of course.
JumpyTheFrog
Get your vitamin D level tested. Peppers are a great source of vitamin C, without the sugar content of fruit. Limit or eliminate sugar for the winter.
solascriptura
Have you tried probiotics? I believe that real foods are better than the supplements. I eat a lot of probiotics in food and it made a huge difference during the last cold/flu season. My kids would get sick, but I never did. Or if I did, it would be so much milder than their symptoms. My kids refuse to eat the fermented products that I do.
LuvingLife
Thank you all so much for helping me, I am having a doctors appointment made soon to get myself tested and see what's really wrong. But for now, I will take some probiotics, lots of Vitamin D and Vitamin C. I also have lots of Echinacia and Golden Seal to help boost my immune system too, and I have elimanted almost all my sugar intake. Thank you again!:001_smile:
