wy_kid_wrangler04
The 2nd-8th grade Creation to Greeks, not the high school...... I was going to ask this on my Sonlight thread but figured I would get more replies if I did a new one just for this :tongue_smilie: What can you tell me about MFW Ancient History? Do like it? Would you recommend it? Is there anything you don't like about it? Would you consider this a good, rich year of study? I have been looking over this and see certain books I would change out for my 5th grader but I would like some reviews by those of you who have actually used it :001_smile: Edited November 1, 2011 by wy_kid_wrangler04
cbollin
oh dear, I realize I misread your post.... when I see MFW Ancient History, I think high school level AHL. You mean Creation to the Greeks. It was fine for us when oldest was in 8th and middle was in 5th. But I'm me. ;) We did Children's Homer on audio. I like the Bible in CTG a lot. I was fine with Streams of Civilization. some people hate the easier book to help get overview of Trojan War. We liked the easy intro, then longer stuff. We had a lot of fun with our feasts that year. from the Jewish OT feasts, to Egypt, to Greek feast. Book basket was harder to find on ancients.... so we did "book basket part 2": any book you want! I thought it was plenty. We did it most recently the year that we moved to a new state, and it got done. I thought they learned plenty. We had plenty of stuff to write. I guess if one wants super rigor, you have to add that. They could do all of the stuff recommended in the intro of the manual with the once a month extra reports from topics in Streams of Civ chapters. I just feel like linking to some things I did that year..... pictures and stories were fresher in my brain then.... oh just a few links... because they are jogging my memory banks. http://board.mfwbooks.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4770#p52622 I know some people hate the science in the program. So if you don't click with it, change it. We liked it. My dh is a research scientist, and he liked the experiments and fun. Others don't like it. http://board.mfwbooks.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4767&p=55787#p55787 oh yeah, it was really awesome timing... the local imax theatre had a Egypt pyramids movie. that was fun to attend but not mfw related. sorry. We had fun with the things like the difference in Sumerian writing vs. Egypt writing. but had fun making both of those activities. The tabernacle! long story, but we built it before we moved.... and got it back out http://board.mfwbooks.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4761&p=47453#p47453 ok, so it was just enough hands on, and art history, and history and Bible, that we got a lot done in small bites and at the end of the year, I think we learned a lot and enjoyed it. We still had plenty of time to work on math, language arts, and archery, ballet, digging in the back yard, getting to know a new city, reading books on stuff other than ancients. mileage will vary. But there's my story. -crystal
cbollin
something else popped in my mind..... during ancients, other parts of the world are touched on slightly due to amount of information from that time frame. We got a brief intro to North and South American cultures... more on them in RTR (aka world history from time of ancient Rome to reformation time). There was some mention of other parts of Asia. So those aren't getting "in depth" coverage in "ancients". They aren't neglected either. More is covered in other years. But I know that gets talked about as well in terms of depth of coverage and topics and places. hushing now as I should do some dishes today. -crystal
