Does Sonlight not have a core for Ancient History?

Recommended Posts

Am I missing something?

What core would you recommend for a 1st, 2nd, and 5th grader?

I am trying to decide whether I want to stick with MFW Ancients or move onto a Sonlight core for next year. Maybe I will just stick with MFW. Dd 5th did SOTW but just basically read through books 1-3 so she has just a very light amount of world History. Ds's have done none yet. What would you do? Stick with MFW?

Core 6 (not sure what it's current name is) covers the first half of world history therefore covering ancient history. I believe Core 1 does the same.

But no core covering just ancient history.

:iagree: SL does not follow the 4 year history cycle, it has 2 years of world history B and C (which B ends up being Ancients) then 2 years US history (D and E) a year of Eastern hemisphere (core F) and then 2 years of world (G and H G/6 being another year of Ancients). So in essence Core B would be the younger elementary Ancients and Core G the logic stage Ancients.

Hmm, well, no, it is not a "good in depth study of the ancients." It is a FIRST GRADE level introduction to many ancient civilizations and some less ancient ones.

It is not chronological. IMHO, it is not appropriate for a (typical) 5th grader.

I love SL cores, but I wouldn't advise using Core B with a 5th grader. I think most cores work well for typical kids one year ahead to one year behind. (So, Core B for K, 1st, or 2nd) But, stretching beyond that is a lot of stretching IMHO.

If your 5th grader is fairly advanced, you could put him in Core 6 (I think that would be Core G now), which is the first half of world history, pretty much chronological. It is a great core. Look over the book list and see if you think he could handle it.

Your younger(s) could do Core B (Core 1, whatever, I hate this change in names!). That would work well, IME. (I did that combo two years ago, then 2 & 7 last year. Worked great for us.

Eh. It's pretty light. If you want a really in depth study you'd probably want to supplement with SOTW. It's enough for us because I want to take things slow, but it's not as rigorous as the WTM recommends.

I did a year of SOTW 1 with Rebecca. Then I did SL Core B. The year with SOTW was infinitely richer and more in depth. I thought the SL was very, very light.

Is there something you're not liking about MFW that's making you want to switch? Honestly, you can add whatever SL books look good to whatever you're doing with MFW and be fine.

I think we will stick with MFW! Thanks ladies :001_smile:

No there is nothing in MFW that is making me want to switch. I am really enjoying our school year this year! Sonlight is just one of those that I have looked at for years and always wanted to try. I think based on the reviews I will stick with MFW! I don't want to buy 2 cores. I would want to use something to keep the 3 youngers together. I can see a few books I will swap out for my dd (same title, higher reading level) but other than that I think this may be our best bet!
