My 6 year old has both front lower teeth coming in. The baby teeth are still there--one is slightly loose and now pushed to a weird angle, the other not even slightly loose. Poll coming (first for me, so let's hope I didn't mess it up!), and feel free to elaborate:).

When I was a kid and that happened the dentist pulled mine out. But when this happened to dd the first time I scheduled an appointment with what many doctors called a great pediatric dentist. I was sure he'd pull it, but he took x-rays, said the roots were dissolved and the tooth would come out when it was ready. dd has now lost about 6 teeth, and only one came out before there was a full grown tooth behind it. they came in crooked, but are finding their way to the correct spots.

but - you should be taking kids to the dentist every 6 months if possible anyway. if the tooth is still there by then, your dentist will probably do something about it.

Two of my 3 kids have had permanent teeth that don't push out the baby teeth. Both have had some pulled by the dentist. My disabled dd has more trouble with this. 3 years ago she had 4 baby teeth pulled by an oral surgeon. Now her dentist is recommending she go back and have all remaining baby teeth pulled (she's 14--time for them to be out! And permanent teeth are erupting around them, but not fully loosening them). The other dd did have a tooth that the dentist said would not have come out on its own--the gum tissue was growing on it. So you're fine for awhile, especially if the baby tooth is loose. But keep an eye on it and if it's not out by your next scheduled dentist visit I would have the dentist pull it. We see the dentist every 6 months and I wouldn't feel the need to schedule a special visit just for that.

This happened to my dd. She had a normal well check-up at the same time and the dentist was the one who advised us to wait it out. The baby teeth eventually loosened and all is well.

At the same time, my nephew had his pulled, because his (different) dentist advised it. They did sedation and it was all VERY expensive for my SIL, even with insurance.

What I can't tell you is whether there was a difference in their cases or if his dentist was after the money.

I vote have the dentist look at it. My middle son had this happen ... the baby tooth was loose but not coming out (and he's not the pull-it-out type). The new tooth was coming out in front of the baby tooth, so we finally took him to the dentist who decided it was time to pull the tooth. They gave him laughing gas, but it was pretty easy as the tooth was fairly loose already.

The fact that one is loose is encouraging... I'd wait for a bit and see if the teeth move forward and push the babies out.

This doesn't always occur, but at six, your child is probably seeing the dentist. As long as your child isn't in any discomfort, I would wait and see until your next dentist appointment. The dentist may pull them that day...if they haven't come out already.

My kids have all sorts of weird tooth issues. Even though it was rec'd to have some of dd's teeth pulled (they weren't even loose baby teeth, with shark-like permanents), I just waited to see if they would come out. Nothing moved, and we wound up having the extractions... her teeth THEN moved up.

But, they get their weird tooth-issues from my genes (pretty certain on that one). Poor guys. At least no one has my problem (and hopefully no one will!).

Hope your little one does well with whatever is decided.

I took my daughter in to see her dentist when she had 2 fully grown in shark teeth (the lower middle 2). I thought they'd need to be pulled, because the baby teeth weren't loose. He took one look and said he wasn't interested in pulling them. He'd said he'd consider it in 6 months, but even then he wouldn't be likely to pull them. He encouraged her to wiggle them, but didn't want me to nag her about it.

I trusted his opinion because he's been a great pediatric dentist for us, and because he's also an orthodontist. He insisted that there was no way those over-retained teeth would cause any orthodontic problems for my daughter. He said they'd fall out eventually, and then the pressure of her tongue would guide the permanent teeth into the right slots.

They fell out 6 weeks later, with very little wiggling, and the permanent teeth did move right into place.

My dd's bottom 2 teeth are completely in and the baby teeth are not even loose at all. I took her to the dentist and she wanted to have them pulled out. I called one of my best friends who is a dentist, texted some pics, she consulted with a few other pediatric dentists and advised that I wait at least 6 months to even think about having them pulled. They could looses on their own (especially if one is already loose) and if they don't she said it is a really traumatic thing to have them pulled and even 6 months of maturity growth for a 6 year old would be worth waiting . . .

My dd7 has a similar issue. 2 bottom teeth. Her first ones to lose. One came out and the other is mildly lose. Both permaenet teeth are coming in (about half-way in, I'd guess) but they are set farther back. It's getting weirder and weirder the further that tooth comes in with the baby tooth just hanging out where it's always been. She's due for a check-up around Christmas time so we'll see what the dentist says then.

Our dentist told us if it went on for a really long time, it needed to come out because it could begin to effect the new tooth. Ds's two bottom teeth were hanging by a thread for about a month and the dentist said bring him in. Sigh. Our dental insurance isn't great so I said to dh, we just have to yank them. Ds really didn't want us to. We talked about it for days and days but finally it just had to be done.

Poor ds screamed bloody murder. I held him and dh yanked the teeth. The actual yanking took less than a minute. Ds got the teeth and was totally fine in moments. He smiled. He was thrilled to have his first teeth for the tooth fairy. But then! Oh, poor dh! He was in tears and he told me in a huff, "Don't ever make me do that again!"

But I stand by my decision to make dh do it and save the dentist bill! If they hadn't popped right out, that would have been different though.

That happened to my son, and his teeth fell out about 2 months after the permanent teeth came in. Our dentist was not worried. He said he would pull them if I wanted him to, but they would fall out if left alone. He was right, and my son did not have to deal with the stress of getting teeth pulled. his new teeth did find their way into the right spots, and they are straight now about a year after they first came in.

With DS when that happened at 5.5 we had to have them pulled out as the permanent teeth were causing problems with a different tooth. Had we left them the 2nd permanent tooth would have caused an abcess in the next tooth over as it was being pushed into the middle of that tooth's root. It also caused the loose tooth to not be loose anymore and actually hurt him because of how it was having pressure on it.

With DD when this happened we were able to wait it out as the baby tooth was still loose and fell out within a few weeks.

Love polls:). It occurred to me that in the op I didn't mention that it was just about 6 weeks ago that the first permanent one started coming in--honestly, it freaked me out because I don't remember that ever happening to me. But lots of people said to wait it out, it happened to their kids, etc. The second tooth just started coming in last week. But, like someone else said, it just gets more and more strange to look at! I was starting to wonder how long was OK to wait. He's not in any pain, though, and he's due for a check-up in a couple months anyway.

I'll keep an eye on them and keep encouraging wiggling--I have been, but he forgets. Maybe I need to offer him $5 if he wiggles it out;).

Thanks for sharing your stories!

My dd has had all of her teeth pulled by the dentist so far (8!). The bottom teeth never got loose and the top teeth loosed, but never came out. The dentist told me the last time that once the permanent tooth erupts, it will no longer dissolve the root of the baby tooth. All 8 teeth have come out with huge roots. "Wait and see" would have only lead to larger orthodontist bills in our future. Definitely get it checked out by a dentist.
