tracigirl
yikes, i just placed all my orders today for our curriculum for my two boys (8 and 10). i am always concerned i am not covering it all. can you look at the curriculum and make sure it is a full curriculum. do i need to add to it. it doesn't look like i have any vocabulary or writing, but i'm not sure what year we need that. 10 year old boy... winston grammar spelling power rightstart math apologia zoology 1 mystery of history 8 year old boy... winston grammar spelling power saxon math apologia zoology 1 mystery of history do i need to add writing and vocabulary to this or does it come in later years? does mystery of history also cover geography and social studies? i will begin this journey in 2 weeks. thanks so much! boscopup
You definitely need to be doing writing of some sort. You could do that without a curriculum, and just do narrations/dictation for the younger and narrations/dictations/outlines for the older, using your history/science/lit as sources. SWB has some excellent lectures on teaching writing on the PHP site. You'd probably want to listen to both the elementary years one and the middle grades one. Your older son may need to do some grammar stage writing before moving into logic stage writing, or he might be ready for logic stage writing. Just depends on the kid and his writing experience and comfort. ;)
boscopup
also, when i get a reply to this post do i get some kind of a notification or do i just have to find it on the forum and check? i'm new to this...sorry :-) You'd need to subscribe to the thread. It's in the "thread tools" drop-down at the top of the thread. You can set it to instant notification via e-mail. There is probably a setting in the user control panel somewhere to notify on replies to all threads you've posted in, but I don't use that one, since I post way too much. :tongue_smilie:
Snickerdoodle
Writing we do across the curriculum SWB style. Have you listened to SWB's talks regarding writing? I really got a lot out of them. They are totally worth the few bucks they are.
tracigirl
thanks s o much! is there a good program that works well with winston grammar for writing? i forgot to mention we are also doing handwriting without tears, but if i understand right it is just learning cursive and correct way to form letters. i will check out the swb...what does that stand for? :-) i am still learning all the abbreviations :-)
Mimmy
I don't know the answers to your curriculum questions, but SWB is Susan Wise Bauer the author of Well Trained Mind. have fun opening your boxes of new stuff!
tracigirl
oh boy, i should have known that one :-) thanks!
boscopup
SWB has excellent writing curricula - Writing With Ease (levels 1-4) and then Writing With Skill after that.
warneral
SWB = Susan Wise Bauer - she co-wrote "The Well Trained Mind" and it is an awesome book by the way! I love her approach to writing and grammar. For writing curriculum, there are all sorts of options. I personally use Winning with Writing http://www.growingwithgrammar.com/1wwwProduct_Page.html Another program which gets great reviews is Student Writing Intensive but it is $$$ http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/catalog/writing I also use Writing with Ease which you might want to use and then move onto SWB's newest writing curriculum: WWS http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Writer-Writing-Student-Workbook/dp/1933339535/ref=tmm_pap_title_0 http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Writer-Writing-Skill-Instructor/dp/1933339527 I use WWE2 for my 9 year old because he and I are both very poor at choosing words to make a summary or "narration". You could start at WWE2 or WWE3 depending on what you think. Best wishes and enjoy the ride!
Crimson Wife
What are you doing for reading/literature? You don't necessarily need a formal curriculum (assuming your 8 y.o. has finished phonics) but you should have some sort of plan.
