shalom22
The movie is called "The Way Back" and it is excellent. I second that. We really enjoyed the movie. Haven't read the book yet.
pqr
I second that. We really enjoyed the movie. Haven't read the book yet. I will be the odd man out here, I did not like the movie. There were escapes from the Gulags but questions have been raised about this one. The director has stated that the film is mainly fiction. Highly recommend Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago (the abridged version is some 600 pages and the complete work runs over 1,000). Applebaum's Gulag is a good read. Robert Conquest's Kolyma is a classic. There were also Americans in the Gulag system. One of the more famous books about this is Alexander Dolgun's An American in the Gulag. mom31257
If you are ever interested in a fiction book with the same kind of story, Louis L'Amour's book, Last of the Breed, was a book that my dd enjoyed. She read it for a literature class she took last year.
