How to record damaged items for insurance?

Recommended Posts

Our basement flooded last spring due to a broken furnace part which caused our pipes to freeze and burst when we were out of town. Our homeowners insurance is covering everything, and we are slowly taking care of all the details. Next on my list is to record items that were damaged: furniture, framed pictures, etc. Should I take photos of everything? List the age, value, etc. of each item?

Call your insurance agent. They will provide you with a claims form that tells you exactly what you need to do to get them to replace the items damaged. Our basement flooded a few years ago due to a sump pump failure. I just listed it on the claims form and they never even questioned it. My cap was $5000 for the whole incident and I had $500 left over after the water restoration people got done, so I had $500 to go buy a couch.
