Stages
Needles or gun for the LOBE part of the ear for piercings..... Needle. A piercing needle looks like this: http://www.razorbladeproducts.com/xcart/files/images/NDL-ST-single_sm.jpg This kind of needle goes through the flesh leaving very little trauma. A gun uses a slightly pointy pair of earrings. It displaces all the flesh and results in quite a bit of trauma. Go to a tattoo shop/piercing parlor. Never let someone near you with a piercing gun. Tangerine
I'm confused. I thought that was what the earlier thread was about.
parias1126
My 18 yr old DD went to a tattoo shop to get her nose ring done. I wouldn't want my youngers in that kind of place, but thats just me. I have always taken my girls to a place in the mall like Claires or a Piercing Pagoda and have never had any problems with any of our piercings (including my own). Stages
Also, a gun can't be properly sterilized. They can wipe down the outside with a lysol wipe, but they can't clean the inside. Please read this before you decide to take her to a mall store for it: http://tattoo.about.com/cs/psafety/a/piercing_guns.htm ETA: I've had piercings go wrong. It's not pretty. You can minimize that risk by going to a professional. And tattoo shops aren't really that scary, especially if you go earlier in the day. There may be some bOOks on the wall, but that's a small price to pay for having a quality piercing. Edited August 25, 2011 by Stages
Bang!Zoom!
My sil is in a field where they do reconstructive surgery on this. Honestly, I'd schedule follow up appt. w/dr to check up on it after it's done...or even before. Please pay careful attention to the healing process after it's done. So many people get in a mess. Not trying to discourage or anything, but be aware.
Plaid Dad
What Stages said. You want needles and someone with actual training to do the piercing. Stay far away from mall shops and anyone who uses a gun.
klmama
So... if one wanted to have an experienced person do it with a needle, is there any other alternative to a tattoo shop? Do doctors do this?

I ended up on IV antibiotics after a gun piercing gave me a pretty nasty infection… I knew better (having had several other piercings done previously - the proper way!) .. I was just being cheap. :tongue_smilie:
