nmoira
"In a test, Himba [of northern Namibia] were able to very quickly point out the standout color below:" However, they have a difficult time picking out the standout colour here, the one we see as blue: Here's the link to the article, How language affects color perception, and, yes, you're told which square is different. The first set of squares still look the same to me even after knowing. Edited August 12, 2011 by nmoira
LauraGB
I'm confused. All the colors in the top picture are green.
Robyn
They all look the same to me, but I asked my husband and he immediately picked out the different shaded square from across the room.
*Jen*
I could tell, but it is so slight that I can see why most would not be able.
nmoira
I'm confused. All the colors in the top picture are green. :confused:That's how they appear to me, but one is different. I initially left out the article title, "How language affects color perception." I read about this phenomenon way-back-when in psychology class, but had never seen an example until today. elise1mds
Huh... I could see it easily. I checked my answer via the link. Now I need to go read the rest of the article. I guess I'm weird? Maybe my color settings are off? Odd.

Maria from IN
Initially I can spot the one they say is different...if I spend too much time on it, they all start looking the same.
elegantlion
I could tell. Dh and I often debate the subtle differences in colors via the Sherwin Williams color book. I wonder if I'm just conditioned to see it.

stripe
I saw one as being slightly more limey, but the ones at the bottom also looked darker so I got confused. I've seen articles about Japanese people and blue/green before.
Snickerdoodle
If I look for too long, they start rotating. nmoira
That's the anchovies talking. ;) ETA: Now you've got me thinking about fermented anchovies, and I'm not sure I'll recover.

zenjenn
The one closer to 11 o'clock is slightly different (NOT the closer to 9/10 o'clock pictured as blue in the photo below.)

Snickerdoodle
Seriously, I was thinking of you this morning and wondering if you fermented your own. This came into my mind because my younger son was asking for dried anchovies for a crispy snack.
zenjenn
I was wondering if I am, (or everyone else is) crazy, because I see the 11 o'clock one as different. If people are calling the one they say is different as different, it is a case of the Emperor's New Clothes. I pulled the image into photoshop and tested them to verify. The one at 11 o'clock is different.

Evergreen State Sue
I did see the standout color, but only after you told me there was one. Then it was more like . . . KidsHappen
My hubby is red/green color blind and he was able to easily pick out the one that was different based on the ightness and darkness of the colors. On the other hand, the stripes on a flag simply looked like light and dark stripes to him.

Zuzu822
Yes, I could, then I read the article and checked my answer. It is very subtle. If I look too long, my eyes start to ache and they all look the same.

myfunnybunch
Weird. I picked it out. I was certain of the square that was a different color, and I was right. I looked from several different angles, and moved my monitor back and forth. But I have NO idea why I was so certain, because it looks the same color as all the others to me. :001_huh: Cat

MamaSheep
I picked the right one too, but not as fast as dh did. I watched the video and found it really quite fascinating. I admit to giggling a bit when they pointed out the astounding new discovery that there's a difference between men and women (more than one, I would say...lol). But all in all, very interesting. Perry
That's fascinating! But, at least based on that video, they haven't convinced me that language has anything to do with it. Maybe the Himba's visual cortex has evolved differently, and they use different words as a result.
