athena1277
Has anyone been successful in learning a new language with one of the free online language programs? Programs like LiveMocha or BBC Languages? I would really like to relearn my high school Spanish and become fluent, but I cannot afford classes or a tutor. Please tell me if a program like this is worth my time or not. Thanks!

cathmom
If you're looking to review, I think Livemocha could help. I don't think you could learn from it without any previous knowledge very well.
WyoSylvia
I cannot speak to the BBC courses but I would encourage you to look into the Michel Thomas method. Most libraries have them. His system was unlike anything else I'd ever tried. He really knows how to break a language down for English speakers both in terms of vocabulary but also for the structure of the language. You will come away with great general skills. That may sound weird but by that I mean, not trying to memorize a lot of specific vocabulary, but rather important useful vocabulary and structures that will allow you to speak about most everything. I have a degree in French so I started in on his advanced course for French and I couldn't believe how much I learned and how much he simplified things that I did know. I also used his beginning system for German for a trip and was very surprised at how much I was able to speak and understand. It is all verbal so it wouldn't be useful if you're working on your writing skills. I hope this helps or at least bumps your thread.
