Insomnia, I'm slow, and my son can talk

Recommended Posts

I cannot sleep, so I thought I'd share a recent event in our lives.

My older son had his last surgery to fix his oral malformations less than a week ago. I'm slow because I was sure it was in September, apparently off the top of my head I don't know which month is number 8 :001_huh:. I had to cancel our vacation so we didn't miss it. Brilliant, I know.

But earlier today (well technically yesterday at this point) at speech therapy he said "I don't want to do that" with ALL the Ts and Ds. Every last one. Before this surgery he couldn't say either at all.

When DH came home from work older DS said "Hi, Daddy!" and DH cried. We've waited years to hear that. Our toddler was so confused though because he'd been saying Daddy for months and Daddy never cried when he did it.

I've been trying all evening to reschedule our vacation and it's not going well. Sigh. I'm happy about my son, sad about the vacation, and just overall completely overwhelmed today.

Thanks for reading my story. Any advice on getting to sleep before the sun comes up?

I don't have any advice for insomnia (find a textbook and start reading? maybe one on a subject in which you have no interest?), because I have the same problem every night, but what a sweet story about your son! Oh, the things we take for granted....

And also, I always (well, almost always) have to say the months while counting on my fingers when it's the 8th month. Must be a mental block or something! I'm getting better, though - that used to be true for months 7 and 9, as well.

Wow, it's so awesome that he's getting such quick results from the surgery. Every time we do a surgery for ds I pray that we won't regret it. So far, after 8 (? it's late) surgeries, there is only 1 that didn't have a great outcome. We have 2 more in the wings.

Bummer about the vacation. What are you trying to do?

When I can't sleep, I try to name all of the states. I always end up forgetting 1 (and never the same one, go figure), but after about 3 rounds, I'm usually out. I'm exhausted, but I'm listening to a great album and getting some admin work finished up. I'll give up the fight soon, I'm sure.

It's nice to know I'm not alone.

This last surgery was a frenectomy (Spellcheck says that wrong, but that's what the paperwork says) Basically undoing his tongue and lip ties. They left them in place in case the skin was needed in a different surgery. But he could not move his tongue at all before the surgery.

We were going to fly out east to see family. It's been a long time, I have a couple Aunts who have not met my youngest yet. He's only 17 months old. I've been looking for a flight, emailing my family, coordinating with DH about his commitments and it's getting ridiculous. My favourite Aunt is going on a cruise, then once she's back DH can't get the next 3 days off of work, then the flights are too expensive (and we can only go with the one airline because they give refunds as credits), and so on.

I'm waiting for an email ... well not actually waiting waiting.. I'm expecting an email. from my step-brother's step-sister (boy families get complicated sometimes) to see if we can still stay with them in a few weeks.

As a Canadian, I have to admit that I don't think I could list all the US states if I had a map in front of me. But I'm sure the effort would melt my brain enough that I would fall asleep anyway.

Yay for speaking! :hurray:

Bummer about the holiday. :(

For insomnia, go and eat something carby and read a saint's autobiography.

Rosie

Mmm carbs.
