Ann.without.an.e
Our dentist passed away and now we have a new one. This new dentist is recommending sealants for all of my kids. I'm unsure. I would love to prevent cavities, but on the otherhand they are 12, 10, and 9 and none of them have had any cavities. I am more concerned about having something in their mouth that needs to be maintained. Sealants can crack or chip, right? ANy thoughts or experiences? Jennifer in MI
Sealants just fall out. No maintenance at all. I had one put on a wisdom tooth just last year. It should last quite a while. All my kids have them. I did the research when they were recommended for my oldest. I remember making sure they didn't have mercury or flouride in them. Momling
I had sealants as a child and had no cavities until I was 30 (despite some periods of pretty bad teenaged dental hygiene). My kids both have them on too.
Jennifer in MI
I *think* one my kids had a sealant put on a baby tooth so that it wouldn't get a cavity. But, don't quote me on that! But, yes. My oldest two are here right now confirming that they both have a number of sealants on permanent teeth.
Cera
I had sealants as a child and had no cavities until I was 30 (despite some periods of pretty bad teenaged dental hygiene). My kids both have them on too. Same here (but I still have no cavities).
amo_mea_filiis.
My son only has a handful of adult teeth, but has a bunch of sealants and crowns.
itsheresomewhere
I only do it if it is BPA free. There is one company so far that is BPA free. However, I had them done as a child and they wore off in a year. I grind my teeth at night. Our dentist only does them on very deep groves as they promote cavaties on the non deep groves. hsmomof2boys
Some of my children have sealants, done before I decided we didn't want them. We say no to sealants now. It's plastic for one thing..... We also say no to the fluoride treatment.
WiseOwlKnits
I don't know of any real cons to them. Our pediatric dentist started putting sealants on DD's teeth as soon as she started getting her 6-year molars. I had sealants when I was a kid and <knock on wood> I've never had a cavity. katnorman
We don't because it is a resin and has BPA in it that is released as the child eat and it wears off. I just don't want that in my kiddos systems.
