*********
So we have an upcoming vacation, where we will be driving from MI to FL. We will stay in two hotels on the way there, and two on the way back. (While there, we are staying in a condo owned by my inlaws.) My BIGGEST worry for the whole trip is bed bugs! I do NOT want to bring them home with us! So, how do I research the hotels that dh has picked for us to stay at? Any website recs that are reliable? TIA! Osmosis Mom
Google the name and bed bugs and some links will come up. I just did this in my research for a hotel.
Cindy in C-ville
Bedbug Registry: http://bedbugregistry.com/ BUT, this is not an "official" registry. Just b/c a hotel is on the list, doesn't mean they have a problem, only that someone suspects they do. But even more importantly, just b/c a hotel is NOT on the list, doesn't mean it's safe. The best way to be safe, is to check the room yourself before you put any luggage in it. And here's how: http://www.bedbuginfo.com/check-a-hotel-room-for-bed-bugs.php But, our bedbug guy said that he REALLY focus on looking at the headboard. They like to congregate there b/c it's closest to their CO2 source. And here's how (http://www.bedbugbattleplan.com/content/view/26/1/): Inspect the headboard. a) Bed bugs love headboards more than mattresses. The reason: every day, the maid comes in and changes the bed sheets, which messes up their normal hiding places. But the headboard is usually left untouched, which makes it an ideal hiding place. In fact, when pest inspectors check a room, the headboard is often the first place they look. Again, you are looking for those small, black fecal spots of digested blood meals, as well as eggs and the bugs themselves. If you find white powder on the headboard, it could be a pesticide. b) Pull the headboard off the bed. In most cases, the headboard just pops right off the bed (it’s often just resting on a bar). c) Use your flashlight to closely inspect the crevices, screw holes, grooves and any notches, depressions or indentations. Happy hunting!
*********
Cindy, I was kinda hoping you'd reply, since you have some experience. I'll be checking out the links on how to see if the room has bugs. That's really what I wanted. I mean, I just need to know for sure how to look for them in our rooms before we bring in any luggage. gingersmom
I would also read reviews on TripAdvisor and see what people have to sya.
vonfirmath
It may be very difficult to find 4 hotels that have never had a bed bug problem. I wouldn't write one off just because it has had one. And note that just because it has never been reported to have had bedbugs does not mean that the person staying there the night before you will not bring bedbugs with them and leave some behind when they leave. Bedbugs travel very well.
