Genetics...

Recommended Posts

My 15 yo is reading a book about genetics. This is her fun reading! She said the chapters are short and not very in-depth. Do you know of a good open courseware class online or some engaging books about genetics?

We are getting Francis Collins' book about DNA from the library today because my 17 yo is going to write a "personal hero" paper about him. I'm thinking that book will interest my 15 yo, but I'd like to have a couple more ideas for her.

Oh, and the reason Francis Collins is my 17 yo's personal hero? He was the head of the Human Genome project. The discoveries they made about DNA led to the development of targeted cancer medications. I am taking one of those medications. Before these meds were developed, I would have had a life expectancy of maybe 2-3 years. If I continue responding well to a targeted medication, I potentially have a normal life expectancy. :001_smile:

My husband is at his AGD meeting in San Diego this week. The Keynote Speaker he heard this morning was Craig Venter, one of the first people credited with sequencing the human genome. (yes I only know who he is/what he did because my husband put it in his FB post!) But he was very excited about going to hear him.

For something fun you might want to get them "The Cartoon Guide to Genetics" by Larry Gonick. He's got a number of cartoon guides (history, physics, chemistry plus others) and he's the illustrator for Muse magazine.

I will look up Craig Venter. Genetics has taken on a new significance and fascination in our home in the past month! I requested the Cartoon Guide to Genetics from our library. Thanks!
