lovemy9kids
I can't really afford IEW. Will WWS get me to the same place as IEW, or should I bite the bullet and buy it? I'm so afraid of doing the "wrong" thing.......... Edited July 15, 2011 by quiverfull
Capt_Uhura
can you give examples of Style? WWS has copia exercises. You manipulate sentences, words for better or worse effect. "The copia exercises in Writing With Skill ask students to rephrase, recast, and reword assigned sentences. The practice of copia forces students to use variety and encourages them to be alert to the patterns of sentences. Copia exercises were a staple of grammar-school education in Erasmus’s day; they trained students to be “resourceful in language†and served as a basis for all future literary education.â€2"

I've heard IEW is good at teaching kids how to "dress up" their writing. For some reason, it just intimidates me and it's a lot of money. I'm really looking for some reassurance from anyone who used it (beta tested it) that it's as good as IEW.....or hopefully...better! and that I don't have to worry.......:)
nansk
You may choose to supplement the copia exercises in WWS with these other writing resources. Based on what I've seen of them, I believe they teach students to polish their writing and learn to express things more eloquently. 1. Igniting Your Writing 2. Capt_Uhura
I've never used IEW so I can't comment on that. I use Sentence Composing to help my son add variety to his sentences.

lovemy9kids
Thank you everyone:001_smile: So, you think WWS would not be enough? Would doing an IEW theme based book and WWS be too much wriitng?
Capt_Uhura
I think it depends on your student. I think WWS is going to be enough writing for my DS11. We've done Sentence Composing for Elementary School and will likely do SC for Middle Grades as it is a nice reinforcement on grammar topics. HiddenJewel
My girls did a lot of copia exercise in Classical Writing and providing variety in their writing is definitely an area they know. I would give WWS a chance all on its own. Once you are into it and you see it isn't helping then you can look at supplementing. I would prefer to have copia exercises to a program that teaches more scripted embellishments.
