dorothy
if this is appropriate for a 10/11 year old dc. I have not read it but it sounds scary from the review. Please let me know your thoughts/experience with H.G. Wells. Thanks.

Mallorie
My son read it last year in fourth grade (10 y/o) and LOVED it. I haven't read it, but just asked him if he found it scary, and he said no.
Mama Lynx
You might read it yourself - it's not long. I'm sure it depends on the sensitivity of your dc, but my oldest read it at about 10 and loved it. If you do go ahead and read it, you should check out the radio broadcast, as well. But not the Tom Cruise movie ;-)
lori in tx
My son loved it we also found the radio version and he listened to it, we then found the film from the 60's and we watched that he thought it was really funny. hth lori
Wendy In KS
She didn't think it was that scary. She's read all the Harry Potter books and lots of other fantasy/science fiction books. And, dad let her watch the movie :glare:, so she thought the movie was much scarier than the book. She really wants to read Frankenstein, but I remember being scared reading that in high school and haven't had time to re-read it yet, so I keep turning her down. Guest Natalie_71
My son just turned 12 and really loved the book! He was a little freaked out and slept with the dog a couple of nights. What really freaked him out was the movie! If I had it to do over, I wouldn't have let him watch it. We have a deal if he reads the book (unabridged classic versions) he gets to rent the movie.:lurk5: Natalie
angela in ohio
It's only scary if you think it's real. :001_smile: Anything like this gives me pause for a day or two. I watched Jurassic Park in college and was afraid I saw a dinosaur on the way home, just to show how ridiculous my imagination can get. It passes quickly, though. runningirl71
She really wants to read Frankenstein, but I remember being scared reading that in high school and haven't had time to re-read it yet, so I keep turning her down. My 12 y/o, then 11 y/o read it last summer. I just asked him if it were scary and he said no. He likes horror/sci-fi/war stuff though. He would tell me all that was happening and he actually cried at the end! He couldn't help himself after Frankenstein felt such remorse for his actions. There is quite a bit of killing that goes on, so you would have to make it your decision. There is a lot of thought provoking, moral issue dilemmas to talk about. I didn't read the book but I do remember having deep conversations with my son about it when he was reading it. Just thought I would let you know my son liked it! :)
