Guest ranpeg
Hi, My son just turned 13 and is still reading at a 4th grade level. We try to choose books that are at or a little above his instructional level but they tend to be too "babyish" for him. (his words) My question is: does anybody know of some good mystery-type books that would be at a 4th grade independent or instructional level? He just told me that this is what interests him (mystery). Thanks for your help!:001_smile:
MicheleinMN
Midnight Test by Pathway Readers is a nice sort of mystery book. What about the Hank the Cowdog series? I'm not sure, but the Percy Jackson series might be a little higher level reading, but is great for adventure/ancient history interest. Storm Bay
Perhaps this list will help http://thepbs.org/pages/4thmystery.html It's not rated by instuctional level, but the titles were selected by 4th grade students. Although it's not a mystery, Frindle is rated at that level on one list I found via a google search, and my dd liked it when she was 12. It's hard to find books at that level that are appealing to teens, of course, but he might also like the Spy Mice series, which my dd also liked (as did my ds, who was 10). I cant remember the reading level of the latter one, theough, but you could check it out. There are three of them and they are a fun spoof of James Bond (the James Bond type is Glory, a mouse, but the other protagonist is a boy around age 12, I think.) There are three of them, starting with The Black Paw http://www.amazon.com/Black-Paw-Spy-Mice-Numbered/dp/1416927700. Another one rated for grades 3-6 that has a mystery with mini mysteries in it and is a series that my 13 yo likes (she has an above average reading level and reads many levels if she likes the books) starts with this book http://www.amazon.com/Children-Benjamin-Pratt-Keepers-School/dp/1416938869. There are others available too. You might want to request a catalog and look through it. We haven't used these particular books, but I remembered them from the catalog. We've numerous items from Remedia. It's a good resource for special ed materials. :)

ElizabethB
Well, no mysteries, but these syllable divided books are written at a very high grade level but are easy to sound out once you learn basic syllables. (Ending with a vowel long as in ba-ker, pi-lot; ending with a consonant short as in ab-stract or ob-long.) The Naval Heroes and Grant books are supposed to be especially boy friendly. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/syllabledividedb.html
