Tohru
I looked over at Kolbe's syllabi and love the History for 9th grade! We are planning on doing Smarr's Intro to Literature, so I don't need the Kolbe literature. Would it be weird to do the Kolbe history and not the literature? In History they are to read Herodutus and Plato, in Literature they read Homer. It seems like it would go well together, but I like Smarr's and we already have it. MicheleinMN
I used Kolbe's 9th grade plans with my older children several years back, and I really liked having the history and literature already coordinated for me, but I can't think of any real reason you couldn't use the history plans separately. I do remember it as one of my favorite years of school with my children. HTH
Tohru
Thanks! By chance, do you remember if you had to have the audio CD's to do the course? We aren't very good audio listeners here and I was hoping to be able to just skip those portions.
Shelly in IL
But don't need the lit, as he is doing Great Books Academy. What is it that you plan to buy for history, if you don't use their lit, too? Are you just looking to buy their syllabus, or what am I missing? Their readings overlap nicely with what we are learning in our lit/history, just looking for something to draw it all together. Thanks for the help.
Tohru
It is the history syllabus that I'm considering. It has the notes, questions, essays, schedule, and study guide for a handful of books. We're wanting to focus on a few specific pieces of history rather than do a survey with a bunch of different texts.
chubbyhugs
Hi jadedone80, We did Kolbe Hisitory and Literature (well, the whole 9th grade program) and we didn't use the CD's and did fine. I found that the CD's probably addressed one question in all of the tests. You could probably get the same information from a good library book. We used Edith Hamilton's The Greek Way to Western Civilization to understand the Greek outlook on life.
MicheleinMN
I agree that the Kolbe cd's were not necessary. I prefer the The Teaching Company's courses by Elizabeth Vandiver to Kolbe's cd's if you want to supplement the reading in the Kolbe history syllabus.
