Mrs. Readsalot Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I have seen what I consider some really strange thing done to food. 1. Pepper on cottage cheese and I am not talking about a little pepper either. 2. Salt on a salad (basic lettuce salad) Interestingly this is done by the same person as the pepper on the cottage cheese. 3. Ketchup on Macaroni and Cheese. Ok I know a lot of people do this but it just grosses me out. Both my ex-husband and current husband do this. I am telling you , if, I ever marry again I am checking on this first Quote

I've been told that's weird! LOL Quote
Shelly in IL Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 1. Cottage Cheese on top of shredded wheat (a little like cottage cheese on crackers, really - adds protein to your breakfast!) 2. Oatmeal made very dry with milk - then dump in a tub of sweetened yoghurt (especially key lime pie or orange creme). this is VERY good! 3. chips on meat sandwiches. Quote
Marie in Oh Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 a bowl full of saltine crackers with milk over them like cereal every night before he went to bed. Wierd. Quote

Corn bread in a glass of milk (buttermilk preferred) Peanut butter mixed with maple syrup Chocolate cake in a bowl of milk Potato chips dipped in ketchup white bean soup with ketchup added I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them right now.... Quote
Guest Virginia Dawn Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I eat potato chips in my tuna sandwiches. I like grilled cheese and apple sandwiches made with raisin bread. When I was growing up my dad ate Ritz crackers with a slice of very sharp cheddar and a sardine on top. I used to like it. I can't figure out why. I had a friend who used to drink a glass of chocolate milk with crushed saltines in it. My 14yo son loves to experiment with putting things in his quesadillas. Yesterday he put pepperoni and spinach in with monterey jack cheese. Quote
mcconnellboys Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I think some people learn to salt and pepper everything and then just never stop. I know some older men who will salt and pepper all their fruit, even their pancakes, LOL! I think the same thing goes for ketchup. I had cousins growing up who learned to put it on everything (and craved the sugar in it, I guess) and they were still doing that as adults. I like mustard on fries, myself...... Quote
Guest Virginia Dawn Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I used to cringe when my grandfather with heart problems would salt his fried chicken. Quote

I am telling you , if, I ever marry again I am checking on this first When I was growing up my family did all of these, myself included. I only do #1 now. :D The most disgusting thing I've seen someone eat was a peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich. It makes my skin crawl and my stomach twitch just thinking about it. I can't even stand to look at mayo, so that particular combo just seems unreal to me. :ack2: I also don't understand the whole "fruit in your cottage cheese" thing. Just weird I tell ya. Salt and pepper it, why the sweet stuff? It is already salty, it's not like it is sweet like yogurt. Quote
percytruffle Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Salt on fruits, believe it or not, is not strange. It really does enhance and intensify the sweet flavor of the fruits (same with salt on salad). Oh yeah, I forgot about the salt of fruit thingie. Ds discovered that if you lightly salt strawberries it tastes like you're eating strawberry shortcake. you get the sweetness of the berries and the salty quality of the shortcake biscuit at the same time. And, with fewer calories I might add.;) Quote
TN Mama Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I have seen what I consider some really strange thing done to food.1. Pepper on cottage cheese and I am not talking about a little pepper either. Peanut butter mixed with maple syrup white bean soup with ketchup added If I eat cottage cheese it is either with fruit (peaches or strawberries) or with a lot of pepper. Yum! Growing up peanut butter & syrup was a yummy treat and I haven't had white beans in a long time, but I always add ketchup! When I was younger I used to put ketchup on my <gasp> TACOS! I have a friend who still does that. Grosses me out now, but hey... who am I to talk? :) Quote
JFSinIL Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My mom grew up in Kansas. She would make a "salad" of peas, sweet pickles and peanuts, all chopped up together and mixed with mayo :ack2: need I add I NEVER ate any of it. She would send us off to school with peanutbutter and pickle sandwiches, too. I have to add - some of the combos mentioned sound like Depression-era cheap foods folks ate because it was all they had. And the kids then enjoy them as comfort food now, in their old age. Quote
Mrs. Readsalot Posted May 16, 2008 Author Posted May 16, 2008 Well I do put salt on watermelon and I loved potato chips on sandwiches (didn't matter what else was on it )when I was a kid....hmmm I might have to make one of those for lunch Quote
Rich with Kids Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I had an uncle that put milk on his chili. Me? I am a very picky eater. I one of those my-food-can't-touch-people. It drives my DH crazy! I can't eat reheated meat. Sweet can't touch salty unless it's m&ms in popcorn. Things like carrot salad with raisins make me cringe. Or grapes in chicken salad. I have issues... Quote
Lisa in SC Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 When I was growing up, my mom never baked bread products. We always, always had "bread & butter." This was simply white bread (like Wonder, yuck) and margarine. My dad would always cut his bread into halves or fourths and top the margarine with applesauce. I always thought that was strange, but his whole side of the family did it. Wonder why? I never asked and now they're all gone. Thanks for asking the question...I had forgotten about that until I read this thread. It was a fun surprise to have a nostalgic childhood memory return. :) Lisa Quote
Tammyla Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Ketchup on a biscuit or eggs, just gives me the willies. Oh, and mayo on a grill cheese. LoL. My oddity is liking natural peanut butter on pancakes with bananas, when I'm pregnant. Thankfully, those years are behind us. Quote
percytruffle Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 You can come eat at our house anytime. We have plates for people with "food touching issues"! Dh appreciates them very much. Quote
Lorna in the boonies Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My food can't touch, either. Also, I eat all of one thing before moving on to the next. My oldest puts mustard on her cantaloupe. Dh puts cheddar cheese and applesauce on his biscuits. The cheese part doesn't gross me out, but the applesauce part does. Personally, my only odd combination is popcorn with candy corn. Quote
mcconnellboys Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Oh yeah! I forgot! People used to mix peanut butter with Karo syrup to make sandwiches. In fact, I think they did this at our elementary school on the days we had those sandwiches. And we used to eat Mayonaise sandwiches - yum! I still like those! I think it's a southern thing...... Now, if you want to talk about weird past foods, such as we used to sell in our grocery store, how about Souse Meat? Hogshead Cheese? Brains? Other internal organs? Fat Back? I know other countries still do this more than do we..... Pickled Pigs Feet..... Who watches Andrew Zimmern? (Is that last name correct?) Quote
RoughCollie Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My DH puts thousand island dressing on cottage cheese. My former husband puts either grape jelly or catsup on scrambled eggs. I put sweet pickles on grilled cheese sandwiches, but I don't think that is weird. Some people I've met think a peanut butter & banana sandwich is weird. Quote
mo2 Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Everyone thinks it's weird that I put grape jelly on my grilled cheese sandwiches. Dd eats cheese and mustard sandwiches. I like to dip french fries in ice cream. We mix baked beans in with our mac-n-cheese. Quote

Mommy22alyns Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I'm a boring Midwesterner with my food. An occasional bit of salt, and garlic salt on almost anything that's not sweet. I've seen: Ketchup on macaroni and cheese... :001_huh: DH likes ketchup on his hash browns. I guess logically it might make sense, but I still raise my eyebrows at it. DH and MIL will salt to death anything that stands still. Really, seriously salt. DH isn't as abundant with it, but the both of them will add salt to country ham. :ack2: Quote

Adrianne Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 She would send us off to school with peanutbutter and pickle sandwiches, too. Peanut butter and sweet pickle (grandma's bread and butter pickles) sandwiches are big in my family. :ack2: I personally like grandma's bread and butter pickles on my tuna fish sandwich with potato chips. My dh likes pepper and salt on cottage cheese. He also puts ketchup or any tomato based product on his mac and cheese. He also likes lemon juice and hot sauce in his V-8 juice :ack2: He gets grossed out when I eat any beans and onions so I guess we are even. Quote
Janet in Toronto Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Is vinegar of French Fries a common thing...I know we like it. This is typical in Canada. All our fast food restaurants have little packets of vinegar with the condiments. Quote
Happy Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My uncles all eat mashed potatoes with green peas and ketchup. I've never tried it and hate to look at it. My dad used to talk about mayonnaise sandwiches...just mayo, nothing else. We love a sprinkle of salt on fruit and salads. Yum. Dh's family eats chicken and rice soup over mashed potatoes. It's good. I once saw my brother pour BBQ sauce over cornflakes. I think it was because we were out of milk and he was a teenager... Quote

LisaKinVA Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My favorite snack (pregnant or not) is garlic toast and orange juice (not mixed together, just eating the toast and drinking the juice). Stacia Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Banana sandwich w/ MAYO! (I got served this at a friend's house when I was a kid. And, here I was, just getting my first bite of what I thought was a regular old banana sandwich when I tasted the mayo. :tongue_smilie:) I used to think dh was extremely strange for eating chocolate sandwiches (actual chocolate bars on bread, or Nutella, or butter covered w/ chocolate sprinkles on bread). He's Belgian -- what can I say? And, I've since been reformed. ;) (Well, except for eating a chocolate sprinkle sandwich -- I still think that one is weird.) Quote
OnTheBrink Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My dad is from Southern Indiana and he made peanut butter/syrup for me when I was a kid.He also puts cole slaw on hot dogs. I LOVE a good, icy cold chocolate cherry coke from Sonic. Quote
TXMomof4 Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 alright, here's a true story. My dh's grandmother celebrates her English heritage. Unfortunately, she grew up in south TX during the depression, so she takes the 'idea' of the English food and makes do with whatever she has. One time she was going to make tomato aspic. Ok, tomato and meat jello grosses me out in principle, but she didn't have any of the correct ingredients, so she made LIME jello, with salsa mixed in. Served with sour cream. We found her cookbook with the recipe marked for tomato aspic and all of her substitutions noted. It was marked *VERY GOOD*. Makes me gag just to think about it. My cousin's grandmother made chocolate gravy to eat on biscuits. It was interesting. Not my first choice for breakfast though Quote

Yes, like spaghetti and eggs, peppers and eggs, pancakes with gravy, tuna with evaporated milk on toast....those are the ones that popped into my head. jacqui in mo Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 It was a neighbor of my MIL's in CA whose dh was Mexican & apparently this was a common dish. A friend of ours put mayo on her hot dogs, which I found to be a tiny bit odd, but she though that us putting onions on ours was VERY strange, LOL. Jennifer on Earth Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Ooo, I love cottage cheese and pepper (preferably with salt too)! It's common at a local pizza restaurant around here to dip pizza in ranch dressing ~ as if pizza wasn't artery clogging enough. My father likes to eat peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. My brother likes peanut butter and syrup sandwiches. My parents love fried Spam with scrambled eggs. And my husband puts hot sauce on just about anything he puts in his mouth (soups, casseroles, salads, eggs, etc.). Can you tell we're from the South?:) Quote
