Cindy in C-ville Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Dh and I are here for a conference that finishes up on Friday night. Our plane doesn't leave until Saturday night, so we have some "date time" on Saturday. What should we do? We're staying near the airport and don't have a car so we'll have to take the train. What do they call it here? TIA! :) Cindy Quote
Sarah in FL Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 The Museum of Art is wonderful, and they have a terrific little cafe (well, they used to...it's been a while since we were there). It is close to some other museums that I haven't been to but I believe are very cool, too. Otherwise, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame might be fun. HTH! Quote
Suzanne in ABQ Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 We really liked the Science Museum (can't remember what it's called, but it's right on the lake. I think the R&R Hall of Fame is right next door). We spent a whole day there, and didn't see everything. Quote
Lisa at Home Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 That is what they used to call the train there. The Museum is excellent, but much of it is closed for refurbishment. http://www.clevelandart.org/ It does sit in a hub of other museums though, and the natural history museum next door is nice http://www.cmnh.org/site/. During the day, the West Side Market is a wonderful turn of the century place to visit, with many long standing venders. It's still full of old eastern European culture. Not sure if you can take the TR there, but there are buses everywhere, don't forget. http://www.westsidemarket.com/ If you go to the Rock and Roll hall of fame, http://www.rockhall.com/ it's right next to the science museum someone mentioned, http://www.glsc.org/index.php and both sit directly on Lake Erie. If it's a nice day, you could walk around downtown. The Rapid Transit goes straight downtown to the Terminal Tower, and there is a lot of stuff to do in there as far as shopping and eating. http://www.towercitycenter.com/ If you went there in the morning, it would be a good place from which to find other things to do. If you are a fan of the movie The Christmas Story, it was largely filmed in Cleveland. You can visit the house, and if you're familiar with the movie look for the areas downtown from the parade scene. http://www.achristmasstoryhouse.com/index.php I love Cleveland! ~Lisa Quote
Angel Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 If you go to the West Side Market, stop in at the West Side Market Cafe! My sister in law and her fiance run it. My father in law says it's pretty good.;) Quote
6packofun Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Sorry, but the Museum of Art is mostly closed right now during a huge renovation! Quote
6packofun Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 University Circle is where you'll find some good museums (as I said, the M. of Art has mostly off-limits for a renovation, though) like the Museum of Natural History and the Botanical Garden. Little Italy and Coventry are some places to walk around and enjoy, with good food. Mama Santos is our favorite pizza place in Little Italy and Tommy's (my fave) or Mongolian BBQ are great in Coventry. Some good neighborhoods: http://www.positivelycleveland.com/visiting/things_to_do/neighborhoods/neighborhoods/ The Great Lakes Science Center is very good and the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is there, too. The NASA Glenn Research Center has a visitors center that is open and (I think) free every day. http://www.slowtrav.com/USA/notes/oh_cleveland_cf.htm You could check out the Flats if that interests you and I agree that the West Side Market is very cool. There are many malls and shopping areas: I like Legacy Village. Quote
6packofun Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I should add that if you want to pay, there is a very good arms and armor exhibit at the museum right now and you can get into that. We're studying the Middle Ages so it was perfect! It's from Austria and the audio tour (these free listening devices they hand out) is REALLY good! Even my kids listened with interest! Quote
