Greek: To do it on one's own or in a class?

Recommended Posts

Dh has to have elem Gr this summer. The class will be about $1000 & will run right up until baby's due date, meeting 4hrs/nt 2 nts/wk.

I offered to do it w/ him on his own. Now he thinks I'll be the teacher. The problem is...I don't want to end up feeling like I'm pulling teeth, kwim? I have enough trouble w/ the kids.

He needs the Gr badly enough that he assures me it won't be that way. So the next problem is that I'm 6mos pg. I'm not sure I'll want to do it long enough to get it done. If we were to do it on our own, we'd do it after the dc were in bed, & we'd start now instead of waiting until June (so we could be done before baby comes).

Otoh, if he takes the classes at sch, he'll be gone at least 5 nights/wk--2 for sch, 3 for work. I'd kind-of like to agree to it just to have him here. But I'm also supposed to finish the final draft of the first book in my trilogy before my b'day (July). Can *I* do it all? Sure. But I might get, um, grumpy. :D So the real question is *should* I? For the sake of time w/ dh & saving $. And, of course, learning Greek. That is its own reward.

Yikes, Aubrey!

What is your experience with languages? What is your background? How much Latin have you had, if any? Have you done Greek at all before? How much Greek does your dh have to learn, in this time period?

I've had 4 semesters of college Latin, & dh & I started doing Greek together last semester. We got through 10-15 ch--I don't remember. It was relatively easy, & we had fun doing it. But when his other classes took precedence (because he was actually enrolled in them), I kind-of resented it.

So we'd have to skim back through those ch's for refresher. He needs to pass a test covering Elem Gr I & II in order to enroll in NT Gr in the fall, which is our goal. That's all of Mounce.

The class on campus covers the 35 ch's in 20 4hr classes. I figure we could start now & have twice as many 2hr classes. Plus, you know the tendency of those classes to go slowly on the first part (that's easy) & then FLY through the end (which is harder). Ugh.

Um...my background in languages? LOL!!! None. Dh did 2 or 4 sem of college Spanish (can't remember) + 2 of Latin. Besides my Latin, I've got a couple sem of Spanish. So not much. :D But you know, language is pretty much language. I've got a degree in ENGLISH heh heh & an MA in teaching w/ a focus on ESL, so I know *how* to learn a language. But it seems like the discipline to learn one is really what a person needs, not all the theoretical stuff.;)

Oh, good :) Well, you know, some people learn languages fairly easily, or at least approach languages fairly easily, and some cannot. I didn't know if you were coming at this from a standpoint of you've never really tried to learn a language and were going to get over your head or not, but that's obviously not the case.

If you're sure you won't drive each other crazy ;-) I say go for it. I hate having to spend money on classes when I can learn the same material myself. If it were me, I'd have to make my husband very aware that being pregnant, I was likely to just flip out at some stage and be unable to continue, and he needed to have a self-study plan in place ;-)

Yeah, I've warned him about that. And that I might not want to work on my b'day or our anniversary. I don't know if he gets it, though.

what if instead of YOU teaching it, he just checks in with you twice a week and teaches YOU the material? That puts the self study and responsibility on his plate, but you'll still get to work together, and you can back out at any time ;)

Hey! My dh was reading over my shoulder as I looked at your thread. He says that, having just finished Mounce this semester (turned in the take-home this morning, Yeah!), he'd recommend taking the class or at least working with a 2nd or 3rd year student who is a tutor. He took one semester of Greek at a previous seminary, covering all of Mounce, and then found he needed an extra semester of Greek credit in order to get into 2nd year Greek at this seminary on time. He chose to do an independent study which would work as a review of the whole book. He worked his tail off and is pretty sure he's scored an A, depending on how the professor grades him - nothing about that was contained in the syllabus, LOL!

So, for what it's worth . . .

HTH!
