Jean in Wisc
I've been using Strong Women Strong Bones, but I'd like to switch to something else. What do you use? I prefer using dumbbells, but have resistance bands and the Swiss Ball (but ds uses the SB for physical therapy and I'm not sure I want to have to get it out of his room, LOL!). I need something that is current (meaning they don't use all those "old" exercises that are hard on the joints & body),and appropriate for women's special needs (can't do the same shoulder exercises as men!!). Good suggestions? Thanks! J

BamaTanya
I've seen two DVDs highly recommended for this. One was available at my library, but I'm doing the Swimsuit Bootcamp on Sparkpeople this month. Maybe next month I'll try something else . . . Anyway: The Firm: Total Body Toner and I Want That Body with Tamilee Webb. You can see clips and read reviews at collagevideo.com. Good luck! P.S. When I asked this question, I was referred to the video clips at Sparkpeople. They're short and very helpful.
MomofSeven
I think the authors name is Peake. It's full of good strength training exercises. I've been following it for several years and feel great.
Jean in Wisc
This gives me somewhere to start! I'll go and check all of these out. Thanks! J
dirty ethel rackham
I was going to second this book. I have it on my shelf and use it when I can't get to the Y.
Hikin' Mama
I have been strength training since Jan., and I also wanted something new. I am (today) picking up at the library Feed Muscle, Shrink Fat by Kathy Smith. It has diet and strength training exercise, but I'm getting it for the exercise. I perused it at Barnes and Noble and thought the exercise portion looked interesting. I have done her step aerobics videos before and liked them. Happy strength training! Tami
This it a total health resource for strength training routines, clean eating, and women's health. I love Oxgen! Check out your local book store for a copy. Otherwise, Sparks People has lots of free routines with video demos. I love Billy Blank's Basic Training workouts using bands for resistance, but not sure if Tae Bo would be your thing! I don't like most fitness videos, but Billy Blank's are fun! HollyDay
I've been using Prevention dvds that combine strength training with cardio and core. It is gentle which is what I need but I am definately feeling it. My favorites are: Personal Trainer 3-2-1 Strong, Firm and Fit I also have a 2 Walk Away the Pounds that I throw in there. I use hand weights for these. This is probably not "strenghth training" as many would think of it. It is not "pumping iron". But, I am finding the gentle approach challenging and I am not getting injured.
Camy-7 boybarians 1 lady
Hope you are well. Are you still working on The Core Program by Peggy Brill? When I was working as a personal trainer (eons ago), I trained a few middle-aged ladies in strength/circuit training. My program takes 1 hour and is done 2-3 days per week. Much of what I did can be found in the books by Joyce Vedral and Gladys Portugues. Joyce Vedral has some great books for middle-aged women. She illustrates routines using free weights and a bench. Her workout can easily be done at home. I've found many of the videotapes (like The Firm series) to be a bit overwhelming, yet I did like their Vol. 5 tape called "Boomers." This can be done by a wide variety of ages, but the squat routine is tough and may need to be self-adjusted. You have probably seen the walking workout dvd's by Lesley Sansone. I love her style, and the workout is actually fun and practical. If you can incorporate daily yoga moves, that would be a good idea, too. Cathy Smith has a great video called "The New Yoga." I really like it. I like the sun salutation (a la Peggy Brill) as a daily stretch if I can't do other yoga moves. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help! Take care, Jean. lvbnhome
Results with dumbells and very doable for SAHM. Visable Results Quickly. Also, I like this book, because it addresses the changes in a woman's body from teens to post-menopause... For instance, there is a reason young girls have that 15 -18lbs weight gain from ages 11 to 18.. and she explains why a woman has BACK FAT... :001_huh: something they didn't tell us about in highschool, but all the teachers, (who seemed sooo old and were probably in their 40's, and that is young to me now)... appeared to have :) Hope you find the book helpful! You might even find the video at your library
