Dog No Pull Harnesses?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of getting Legend a no-pull harness. He doesn't drag us, but he doesn't walk casually either. He doesn't need an aggressive way to reign him in, just something to keep him mindful.

The problem?

He measures 23" at the neck.

Medium is supposed to fit to 24".

Large fits from 24" and up.

I wonder if I dare get the medium? The reason I ask is because they fit through the legs and he has a VERY large chest. (He's about 105-110 German Shepherd.)

Hm. Thoughts?

Just a thought... I like a "pinch collar" better because it doesn't cover their nose and mouth. (oh.. maybe yours wouldn't be over their mouth, but rather over his body??)

A pinch collar and a smart dog, means no pulling (and so no real pinching:))

I'm getting one of the Pinch collars that have a buckle, next, so easier on my fingers :)

We have a pinch collar and it's VERY effective, but we're taking him camping the next two weekends in a row. We'll be around a lot of people with an intimidating looking dog (KWIM?) and I'd rather have him have that sweet, well behaved, warm, fuzzy doggy look rather than wearing the pinch collar. He's not a lunger, and very good. He tends to be calm submissive - dropping down to lay by your feet when you sit or stand somewhere for a while, but when walking he's an eager and fast walker, kwim?

It wouldn't be a head harness, but a body harness. It has a contraption that pulls on the front legs and makes it uncomfortable for them to pull.

I'm thinking a good balance of non menacing looking and still helps control???

Ask if you can exchange/return it. Our dog is funky like that too and I got a no pull harness but was worried about size. Plus, because we walk near saltwater NOTHING lasts LONG because the salt eats at it. Alas.. but anyway the shop agreed if it was the wrong size I could bring it back. :D

I have had excellent success with the Gentle Trainer - first with our lab mix who was a "runner", then with one of our new pups who just wasn't getting it that walking on the leash did not mean yank my arm off.

I would buy the bigger no-pull harness due to your dog's chest size.

FYI for anyone who might need the information. We found out that Sporn makes two different kinds of no-pull harnesses. The mesh one is a L/XL. We picked it up tonight from PetSmart and we'll try it on him tomorrow. It looks ENORMOUS. :D The true test will be this weekend - his first controlled camping trip with the family. :) It should be a good time to be had by all.

I understand completely what you are going through. I have tried several no pull harnesses and they either don't work or they hurt my dog and don't work. I recently bought the horgan harness, because my neighbor recommended it to me and it works like a charm! It doesn't hurt my dog at all and it wraps around the back legs of my dog, since that is where most of their power comes from. I really have never heard of a harness like it before. Ever since I bought one, I have been recommending it to everyone who has a dog! It is such an amazing harness! You can order it online, if you type in Horgan Harness in google it should be the first link that pops up. I hope this helps!

I have had success with the gentle leader. http://www.gentleleader.com/View.aspx?page=dogs/products/eco/gentleleader. Our dog is close to 80lbs. Once I started using the gentle leader pulling stopped being an issue.

This is what we used also. we had a 120lb american bulldog that would drag you everywhere. We tried everything. Once we started with the Gentle Leader 2 walks and no pulling at all and she would walk right beside me. Best money I ever spent.

Don't get that one! Get the Easy Walk Harness, from premier. It works MUCH better, is way more comfortable for the dog, and won't rub his "arm pits" raw the way the otherone does. The easy walk harness is like power steering on a dog, it directs them the way you want them to go, and back towards you if they pull. I've been a dog trainer for years and it is the easiest way to stop pulling immediately. (then you work on training, lol).

Oh, and it is MUCH easier to put on the dog. If you just undo the body strap you can put it over their head like a collar, then buckle the belly strap, rather than trying to put their legs through.

I loved gentle leaders for MOST dogs, but many dogs, and particularly shepherds, hate it so much it is really sad. It would takes weeks to get the dog used to it. I'd go with the Easy Walk Harness, made by the same company. No adjustment time at all, they love it.

We bought a harness at the pet store, but it didn't seem to work well. The Vet had a brand that they recommended and sold. It might be the pinch one. It had three areas that had to be adjusted to fit our dog. It was nice to have the Vet actually fit it for him. And it works like a dream.

My dog is out of a gentle leader in 2 seconds flat no matter how tight I make it.

We were shown a no cost trick years ago and it's worked ever since. Hook a normal 6 foot leash to his collar. Bring it down his back and hold it in place just before his back legs while you wrap the leash under his belly and back under the leash. Walk on the side that the leash handle now comes threw (so it doesn't come back over the leash). When he pulls, it will tighten around his belly, which he won't like.

The first two times my dog pulled, he freaked out. He yelp and flipped through the air. I don't think it hurt as much as surprised him. He has total control on how much it pulls. If he walks nice, it just hangs loose under his belly. If he pulls, it tightens. I've been able to walk my dog ever since. He doesn't pull at all anymore. But if I take one step out the door without wrapping the leash around his belly, he rips my arm out of the socket and drags me down the street.

I have to second the Easy Walk harness. We use them at the shelter for the big dogs with poor walking manners. It makes a huge difference. Once the harness is on, the dog behaves differently. I started using one on my labradoodle, Bear, because, while he has decent leash manners most of the time, he can get impulsive and try to bolt after a squirrel or another dog. With winter coming and slippery sidewalks, I just couldn't afford to have him do that and me end up in the hospital.

Our labradoodle could not get used to the Gentle Leader as well. He would lay down and rub his head on the ground like a crazy dog to get out of it, despite our efforts to reward him for wearing it.

When we get a 'puller' we use a pinch collar-- it does NOT hurt them in any way--but it does get their attention! After a few uses we transition to our 'regular' collars-- the ones we prefer are a combination of a regular collar and a choke chain-- if they begin to pull there is more pressure--but there is a limit (safer) compared to traditional choke chains...
