Novafan
I am looking for a great "spine" for US History, grade levels 1-4. Thanks!
Chris in VA
Check out the new spine WP is using for AS 1 and 2. (go to their website) Also, they used to use DK's American History encyclopedia. Some also like Marshall's The Light and The Glory, paired with his From Sea to Shining Sea (for me, it's a nice supplement--very Christian, providential, but I wouldn't use it as a spine) Some ideas for ya! farmnwife
The Rainbow Book of American History by Miers Earl Schenck and James Daughtery is what we really like for this age. You can see the book here but you can get it cheaper used at amazon. It is a large, hardback book. The chapters are short.
Tami
My favorite for those ages is A Child's Story of America by Christian Liberty Press for a spine with selected books from the Childhood of Famous Americans series. Both of those are hits here!
PeterPan
Well after sweating about this just a little bit TOO MUCH, haha, I think I've decided to use http://www.amazon.com/History-United-States-Its-People/dp/096527358X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210374964&sr=8-1 I own it, had it stuffed in the closet, forgotten. It has more detail than Abeka4 but isn't as complex as Guerber. Yes, we like the Childhood of Famous Americans (COFAs) too! My dd reads them over and over, just loves them. We own CSOA, and while it's fine, I don't care for the way the author talks to the reader. It's just a personality thing. It's fine. Abeka4 is fine. We own the DK book and it's fine too. It's really just a matter of personality and what style you like, kwim? You can see samples of most of these on RR or amazon. For us, I think the Eggleston book is going to be a good fit and something I can deal with. It has extensive comprehension questions, so it's something she can do independently or with just a modicum of discussion effort from me. I plan to make checklists for each chapter and do one a week. It corresponds really well to the VP cards. My dd will be 4th, and it looks spot on to me for that age. If you have youngers, Eggleston has a younger book with a red cover that would be perfect for the K-2nd age group. Now watch you say you have a 3rd grader, lol. I guess just look at them and see. Both are really good, but the blue book has more detail. For 3rd grade, I'd probably do Abeka4, not the blue Eggleston, just because Eggleston really has a lot of detail for a 3rd grader. My dd is a real history buff and already pretty widely read on american history, so I figure the blue book will fit us well. If I had been chosing a year ago for this year (3rd), I probably would have done Abeka4. That's what I was saying, they're all good and to just pick one that strikes your fancy and use it in the way that you like to do history. Angelina has been throwing me baskets of wisdom (use the KQ maps, how to schedule it and whether to correlate it to the VP cards, History Pockets, TQ for book lists, etc.), so my plans are finally feeling more pulled together. I just need to type up some charts correlating everything, and we'll be good to go!
Lizzie in Ma
from the website..." This Country of Ours by H. E. Marshall Stories from the history of the United States beginning with a full account of exploration and settlement and ending with the presidency of Woodrow Wilson. The 99 chapters are grouped under 7 headings: Stories of Explorers and Pioneers, Stories of Virginia, Stories of New England, Stories of the Middle and Southern Colonies, Stories of the French in America, Stories of the Struggle for Liberty, and Stories of the United States under the Constitution. Ages 10-14 615 pages" I do not agree at all with the stated age range, we have enjoyed all her books since my dc were quite young. Fortunately, you can see it and decide for yourself. HappyGrace
"Story of the 13 Colonies" (Guerber)-you can see chapters at Nothing New Press. We're doing it along with Truthquest for reading suggestions, and adding in activities, etc. Haven't got it all fleshed out yet though. One thing holding me back is that TOG schedules Guerber for logic stage, and since we may do TOG for logic stage, I may want to save the Guerber for then. I may ck out some of the suggestions in this thread!

I may ck out some of the suggestions in this thread! You can follow it up with "Story of the Great Republic" by the same author. You might also look at the Steward Ship unit studies--they are very multi age. IIRC there is one about the great explorers, and there are several focussed one about various aspects of American history. The Civil War and Abraham Lincoln ones are good. I have seen the Western Expansion one as well, but don't like it quite as much. Then for middle school, "All American History" is good.
