What to do in Juneau, Skagway, and Prince Rupert for a day

Recommended Posts

Hubby and just turning DS6 are going on the homeschool cruise to Alaska. I've been wandering around "what to do" sites and they are very commercial (planes, helicopter rides etc).

We are more interested in finding out about interesting old parts of town, nature, things distinctly northern that will wow little guy. E.g., is the glacier in Juneau worth going to see if you won't be flying over it. Etc.

Juneau 11am-9pm on a Sunday

Skagway 7am-8pm on a weekday

Prince Rupert 8am-6pm on a weekday

Thanks so much. I have such confidence that some of you have done this trip!

When you're in Prince Rupert you're in my neck of the woods -- we live about 2.5 hours from Prince Rupert. If the weather is nice, it's a beautiful place (scenery etc.). Occasionally we do a day trip to Rupert and eat fish and chips and walk around -- we haven't been for a few years.

We've done a similar cruise -- Vancouver to Alaska. It was fabulous. My family made fun of us because they thought we should be going somewhere warm and south. But it was one of our best vacations. (It wasn't a homeschool cruise. In fact, we didn't have children yet.)

Have you been to the grizzly bear sanctuary? The one with the long native name beginning with a K?

Hey, That's 1.5 hours from me!

The museum right by the waterfront is quite nice and not too pricey. I haven't been to the grizzly sanctuary, but I'm sure that's pretty nice, too. There's a small strip of shops right by the water and some restaurants. The shops aren't spectacular, but they might find something. You don't get to go along?

When is this trip happening?

We are going on this same cruise.

In Prince Rupert we will be going on the bear watch.

In Skagway we will take the train. We are also going to do the gold fever tour which is VERY touristy, but the children wanted to pan for gold, and this was the excursion that fit our schedule.

In Juneau we have booked a whale-watching tour on a small boat (not an RC excursion--we will have our own boat). We also hope to ride the tramway up the mountain.

Can you tell that all of our money is going into experiences, not shopping?! We have told the children that we will not be buying a lot of souvenirs. They contributed money to help with the excursion costs.

If we could afford a helicopter ride to a glacier and get to walk on one, we would do that too. But, whew, the cost!

Cruise Critic is a great resource for excursion information, both RC and private.

Alumni Cruises is organizing it for the 3rd week in July. I'm staying home to work and get some planning done. I also get seasick just standing on a wharf and smelling creosote. I have been on the SS Franconia, Rotterdam, New Amsterdam, France, United States, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Oriana, Canberra, and a freighter where our waiter was MURDERED (we ended up talking to the FBI on Adak Island, Alaska), and honey, I have PAID MY DUEs on ocean travel. I barfed on nearly every boat I've been on (the WORST was a ferry crossing from Melbourne to Tasmania). I managed to barf pie cherries up my nose in the Puget Sound.

Thus far we have reserved the Skagway train to the Pass and back....
