DS8 - Basically at a 2nd grade level. This week they worked on conjunction exercises, vocabulary word look up, spelling & punctuation corrections after writing their rough drafts and finally their final draft. This is a copy of his final draft.

The Travels of Ching -

Once upon a time in China there was a doll named Ching. The owner had made this doll perfectly. He took care of Ching. Then he sold him to a toy shop where everything was worth a lot. A little girl wanted Ching, but she was poor and had no money. A merchant came and bought the doll. He did not want Ching, but sent him across the ocean in a ship, across a lake in a boat, up a mountain on a llama, and to America. Ching went to a girl who lived in a beautiful penthouse. This girl did not want Ching. She had other dolls and clothes she liked better than Ching. She threw the poor doll out of the warm house and on to the cold, wet snow. Then one day a man came and saw the doll. He picked it up and went to his house. He did not want a doll. He collected furniture instead of dolls like Ching. He threw Ching into the trash. That evening a man came and took the trash and went to the dump. The man had to put Ching in a place all alone. That next morning a different man came and got the doll. He fixed Ching until he made him new again. He did not want Ching. He sent Ching down a mountain on a llama, across a lake on a boat, across the ocean on a ship, and to China where his niece lived. This girl did want Ching! She had wanted him when she first saw him at the toy shop long ago. Then the girl kept Ching, and Ching finally got a new home.

The End.

DD9s final draft of the same story - 4th grade level

The Travels of Ching -

Once there was a doll named Ching. A man had made him with his best fabric, sewed him with his best thread and stuffed him with his best stuffing. Then he sold Ching to a fancy doll store where everything in quite a lot of money. There Ching sat in the store window waiting for someone to buy him. A little girl came by and looked at him. She wanted Ching very much but had no money to buy him. A man came by and took Ching to the post office and the post man took Ching all the way to America. Ching was sad and tired so he went to sleep. He had been sent to the man's niece in America. She did not want him because she had too many dolls anyway. So she sat him on the rail outside. He fell into a flower bed. He was surprised and distressed that nobody wanted him. Then when he though that he couldn't bare being outside any more, a man picked him up. The man did not want Ching because he collected old things and antiques. So he gave Ching to the cook. The cook did not want Ching so she threw him away. Ching was beginning to think that nobody liked him. The garbage man didn't want Ching either, so he was put all by himself in the dump.

Finally, a Chinese laundry man came and bought Ching for 15 cents. He washed him and ironed his robes, but he didn't want Ching. He sent Ching all the way back to China to his niece. His niece was the girl who had wanted Ching so much a long time ago, and she wanted him now too! She played with him and made him new robes. Now he always sleeps well! Finally Ching was happy.

The End

** We are basically at the beginning stages of using the Progym. The kids have enjoyed WT1 very much. I am considering using WT2 with ds next year, and CC (Classical Composition) - Fable & Narrative with dd. They are beginning to get comfortable with writing, corrections, rough drafts & final drafts, etc. I am hoping that by using Kilgallon along with CC next year they can begin to develop their vocabulary as well as learn how to play with sentences a bit in their retellings.
