Melissa in Australia
Hi everyone , remember I posted about how scans showed my sister's baby appears to have no brain, then later scans seemed to show lots of fluid around the brain, and only bits of the brain visable. Update. She had her baby last night. The baby was born face first, and then went into shock. the baby had to be revived. aAfull team of pediatrician and nurses were right in the room with the crash cart etc, so were able to revive it in less than a minute. The baby's head appears to be normal in size, and all the tests run so far tend to indicate everything is fine with the brain, though the baby will have scans in a few days. The baby has a bad infection and is on antibiotics and a drip because it's glucose levels have crashed. My sister isn't doing so well. As you might remember she had a large blood colt behind the placenta from around 22 weeks. She hemorrhaged pretty bad, the placenta broke up and wouldn't come out. She ended up having 3 hours of emergency surgery after having the baby. For religious reasons she cannot have a blood transfusion. I forgot to say she had a girl. Thank you everyone who have sent encouraging pm's and thoughts and prayers over the last few months.

NanceXToo
Thank you for this update. I have thought about you guys from time to time and wondered how things were going. I'm glad to hear that the baby seems to be doing okay in regard to normal brain development! I hope that the repeat scans continue to show that! I'm sorry your sister went through such a rough time though! I hope that with the surgery behind her she recovers rapidly and that they can go on to the business of being a happy family very soon! Melissa in Australia
Update, My sister is recovering, the baby is stable and is still having ongoing tests. the baby weighed 2835 grams, or 6.25 pounds I am having trouble finding out information as she is not to receive any calls until tomorrow, and My mother ( who is with her) only texts a frustratingly small amount of information. Even though she normally lives 20 minutes drive away at the moment she is in a hospital around 500 km away. I will keep you all posted with updates when they come to hand. Melissa in Australia
Latest update, My sister's baby had it's brain scans today. There were better than hoped, but not so good. There is definitely a part of the brain missing. My mother who passed the information on couldn't remember the name , but it is right at the back of the brain and pretty small, and has something to do with sight. The specialist who interprets the scans said that the baby has rewired it's brain, and no one could say how this missing part would affect the baby. The specialist said that some people go though life with this part missing and never even know it, others are badly affected. There is also some fluid around the brain, but most importantly it hasn't changed since scans done 3 months age ( while still in the womb). All other tests have come back positive, apart from the hearing test , which she failed, but she responds to sounds in the nursery, and the nurse said that many babies fail the hearing test, but pass it a few days later. All tests for things like cerebral palsy have come back as negative, which is a huge relief. so far so good.

Amber in AUS
Melissa I have wondered how your sister was getting on. It is wonderful to hear that she got much further in her pregnancy than first feared. Having a bub in NICU is daunting but the Drs and other staff are amazing! Failing the first hearing screen is quite common, hopefully she passes the followup one. I hope your sister is able to rest and let her body recover following all that trauma and blood loss. Thinking of you all.
